Pic of the Day--Captain Kirk

Post by Hank Zumach »

Hi All--Today's variety is probably in the garden of every Trekkie in the quadrant. Captain Kirk is a plant deserving of its esteemed name. Attractive, nice growth rate, fends off Klingons (and slugs), and bears up well to the local star's 4-5 hours of direct ray bombardment. Its center coloring turns from yellow to whitish as the season progresses. Since being purchased in 2001 (the year of Arthur C. Clark's well known Space Odyssey) it has grown from being 16x7 to 24x12, 41x20, 48x19, 57x24, and 65x25 last summer. There must have been a malfunction in the transporter when originator Kirk Brill beamed this one up for its registration measurement and got corrupted data showing a mere size of 36x20. Hmmm....maybe the Ferengi's (the descendents of present day Republican Party members) were behind it all in an effort to follow the 119th Rule of Acquisition.

Thanks for choosing this one today, Hank. It has been on my list, but I had never seen a more mature one. Wasn't sure if it would stand out amongst the other green-centered-dark-edge ones... But it does! Nice pics, as usual. :D

That is an impressive specimen, Hank! I think Brill's registration size is odd. CK is a sport from Gold Standard, making Striptease its sibling. Given the growth pattern of GS and its sports, we would expect CK to be a large hosta... and it clearly is.

CK is an improvement over regular GS, I think. The margin is wider and more striking. The center keeps its yellow a little better than GS in my garden, though it does eventually get pretty parchment in sun.

As with Hank's, my pics from 2003, 2005, and 2006 demonstrate what a "good grower" CK is. My pics also show that CK inherited the family trait of frequent mutations. There is a named white-centered sport of CK - Enterprise. In the photos you can show the development of my sport in 2005 and then 2006. I didn't get the plant divided last year - we'll shoot for that this year and see how H. "Dammit Jim" develops.

In my 2003 pic, I assumed that the white centers were old foliage, then the plant threw a new flush of foliage with the yellowish center. Now, after observing the sport in 2005 and 6, maybe it was already showing in the original plant. How about it folks... does your CK turn to a parchment center like Gold Standard if it gets a lot of light for a whole season?

Anyway, these show the growth rate of the plant from 2003 and how the sport developed in 2006

Please forgive the hail damage...

I love this hosta, what a great performer! Thanks for the great hosta fix Hank, I really need it considering all the cold temps we're experiencing now :frosty: .

And to all the hosta hybridizers out there, we really need you to develop a H. 'Mr. Spock' (I know there's 'Spock's Ear' out there somewhere, but I want the whole guy...LOL!  ). Something with pointy ears and bi-color (afterall Spock was half Vulcan and half earthling).

I love this hosta....and your pics show why. It is quite stunning, imo. I will admit that the reason I bought it in the first place was for the name. I guess you could call me a "closet trekkie". I shared my CK with a friend of mine whose DH passed away. He was a true trekkie! Had books and models and such about the construction/engineering of the Enterprise, etc. He was an engineer himself and sadly passed away at age 52. So I split my plant and gave her half to plant in her garden in his memory.
Here's a pic of my CK from 2004 and 2005:

Not correct Hank

You know my way
65"is the same as 65 cm- and then there is the half one so 60 centimeters it is

I have 60 centimeters for it :D and everything fit just perfect

Nice ones everybody!! :P And thanks for the chuckle, Hank.

My Captain Kirk has never amounted to much so far for some reason. It's in a 2004 holding bed where some do very well & others just kinda don't do much. Makes no sense cuz they all get too much afternoon sun.

Pia - my solution on hostas that outgrow their allotted space is going to be dividing the plant in 1/2. With my limited yard that's now expanded as far as it can be, there's no other solution. :???: I can either give 'em to friends whether they want 'em or not or sell 'em.
