Well looky here - at Judy Rocco

Post by wzbt03 »

Thought you might enjoy a little red. This is an actual named hosta not a seedling, care to guess which one?

The base of that hosta is a bit dark on my monitor, but I think I can see the red reaching up to the back of the leaf?
Not sure what it is, but the leaf shape reminds me a bit of Red October. Looks like a beautifully shaped hosta. :)

Okay

Post by wzbt03 »

Okay I will tell what it is but I am sure some of you know and are just letting others guess at bit for fun.

Its 'Judy Rocco' and it looks very nice. Sadly it appears to be one that does not set seed.

I wouldn't have guessed, because I had never even heard of it. I know now, though, and I'll be looking for it! Thanks, wz! :D

'Judy Rocco'

Post by Jamie »

Here's a shot of a OS 'Judy Rocco' I got in 2004.. My leafs are much rounder and the plants overall height is a lot taller then the one you posted . Maybe it's just cause it's a young TC. :-? :-?

Thanks for the picture of a more mature specimen Jamie. Can't wait till it grows up now.

Pieter...nice job on retouching that pic. I can really see it well now and I sure do love those red pets! I hadn't heard of Judy Rocco either, but now I'll have to add it to my wish list.

Picture of the Day - Judy Rocco

Post by redcrx »

'Judy Rocco' is a complex hybrid - "hybrid of ('Spritzer' X H. pycnophylla) X H. longipes hypoglauca" from the MyHosta database.

I picked up a 'Judy Rocco' in the middle of the season. I had seen a large one at a hosta show and didn't buy it - (no idea where my addiction was that day).

Here is a close-up of that second picture. The maroon color goes right up the center vein and is visible on the leaf edge.

Re: Well looky here - Judy Rocco

Finally caught Judy Rocco in flower. It's growing in a trough with Purple Heart at one end that is trying to take over the trough. Mango Tango is in the middle and getting pushed by PH. Judy Rocco is at the opposite end but is hard to see with the others in the trough.
The big leaf in the middle is from a hunk of Purple Heart that is trying to push Mango Tango out of the trough - I need to get that hunk out.

Here is Judy Rocco in flower today. After I looked at my first pictures, I noticed the style was odd but my photo was blurred. I went out for another set and found there were multiple styles but not fused like I have before - these look like separate strands twisted together.
