Pic of the Day--Halcyon

Post by Hank Zumach »

Hi All--We have several of today's variety, Halcyon, growing in somewhat different light conditions. They are all doing very well. Halcyon has been part of hostadom for over 40 years and has been the bluest variety for most growers. In our garden Halcyon and Blue Dimples are in close competition for the "bluest" title. Along with its attractive appearance, Halcyon is a good pod and pollen parent, has produced some excellent sports, has a nice growth rate and is free of slug damage. This combination of qualities makes it one of the very best varieties available. I purchased the first plant in 1994 and the one in today's photo has spent its time in a spot that gets only indirect light. Its size has stabilized around 50x20, just a bit larger than Zilis' listing of 43x18.

Beautiful, Hank!! :P Those golds near it sure set it off nicely!!

I thought I had a spring pic of mine from last year, but didn't find it. Mine was 11" H x 23" W, leaves were 4 7/8" W x 6 3/8" L with 12 vein pairs last year. It is just starting to send up a few new leaves now after being cut back so I have no hopes it'll be that big this year - maybe next...

Halcyon stays blue all year here , as we don't get really, really hot. I love this plant for the color and the leaf shape, and the total plant shape too. It will always be among my favorites. No wonder it has been around so long. You have the green one, the green and white one, and then there is the blue one....Halcyon!
