Pic of the Day--Feather Boa

Post by Hank Zumach »

Hi All--Feather Boa is a variety that I got in 2002. This plant starts the season as a bright yellow and becomes chartreuse by mid summer. Other than that, I find it hard to think of much to say about this unremarkable variety. I have it growing in a spot that gets dappled light until early afternoon. It's size has gone from 12x6 in 2002 to 14x5, 14x4, 15x6 and 15x6. Hmmmm...that is a remarkable consistency of size. (:-) My plant is in line with Lemke's listing of 12x6x but seems unlikely to ever reach Zilis' 27x11. Slugs have not bothered it.

I have Feather Boa and Lemon Lime and have a hard time telling them apart. Charlene

Charlene - I have both too, but I've never found Feather Boa to be as vigorous of a grower as Lemon Lime. I have one Feather Boa that receives more sun than the other one [well it did before Elvis Lives got big] and the one in the sun stayed a brighter yellow than the other one.

I have the same experience as Ren with respect to sun exposure. I have a couple of small divisions that see about 6 hours of sun right now and both are going nice and yellow, and considerably wavier than the one that's in open shade and gets virtually no direct sun.

It sounds like its time for me to find a sunny location for our plant. Its really helpful to get this kind of practical information about varieties. Like I've said before, too often the catalogs' information is incorrect or misleading.

I picked up this Feather Boa very early in the season. It went into a trough and put up some really late flowers.
