'Wahoo'!!

It's stayed little - I guess I should look to see what size it should be - but it's got lots of eyes this year & looks better than it ever has. :P

This eye has decided to be center-variegated. Hurrah is a yellow centered sport from Peter Ruh, but it looks nothing like this. The pic in the library shows an elongated, twisted, folded, wavy light yellow leaf with a narrow green margin.

Hugo's Database says Wahoo is Small/Medium; Zilis says that it's a medium-sized mound of heavily variegated foliage; registered as a hybrid of Tokudama Aureonebulosa x Tokudama Flavorcircinalis by Paul Aden; foliage colors variable, ranging from heavily streaked to yellow-margined to all green; but that the foliage, flower color & blooming season are not Tokudama-like. So I'd say that means it's anybody's guess what it really is.

At any rate, it looks the best it ever has this year even though it's only about 12" across & maybe 6" tall. I got it from a woman who has a small garden center an hour east of here. She got it from her elderly father's garden before his house was sold. She had both green plants & variegated. She didn't realize it was sposed to be a streaked plant [neither did I until later] and told me she thought maybe the streaked divisions were somehow getting more sun. :???: :P

One of my favorites...
I got mine from a friend. She bought it back in the early-mid 90's, and it took me 7 or 8 years to get a start of it. Hers was slow-growing at first, and I didn't even ask for a piece of it. She got her labels mixed up, and insists that it's Whirlwind, so in HER garden, it's Whirlwind; in mine it's WAHOOO!!!!
I divided a huge solid green hunk off it last year. It seems that darn near every leaf looks a little different.

:o WOW!! Yes they sure do, Linda. Looks like mine has plenty of growing left to do.

I'm  about your friend thinking it's Whirlwind. She must think every Whirlwind she sees for sale is a mislabeled Wahoo. LOL

Yep, she does. I tried to explain it to her, showed her pics, etc. Drug out the Hosta Handbook. I thought I had her convinced for a while, but then she goes home and looks at hers, and she's just sure she's right. She doesn't try to keep track of her hostas anymore, and quite often buys the same hostas over again. I think by now she might have forgotten both names altogether. She's a great friend, and she enjoys her garden, that's all that really matters anyway!
:D
