Pic of the Day--Color Glory
Hi All--We are getting almost to the end of our Loser's Lane. Color Glory is the plant that inspired me to add Loser's Lane to our garden. Since I don't seem to have the ability to throw away a living hosta and I couldn't stand to look at Color Glory anymore, I decided to put it and several other losers off in spot where few visitors bother to go. I bought it in 1994 and the first couple of years I had Color Glory it was one of my favorites. By the 3rd year it began to have some burned out leaves and each year the problem got worse. It reached the point where about half the leaves became so ugly they had to be removed. The first photo was taken in early July and shows the early stages of the burn out. The photo also shows an all green sport. The second pic was taken in late September and shows how much of the leaf material falls apart. The plant's size has bobbed around quite a bit, varying from 31x12 to 39x14 in the last five years. Zilis lists it at 40x36.

EEEEK!!
Mine has never looked even close to that bad. Like I said a few minutes ago in another post, mine was moved to deep shade - the deepest I've got - in summer 2003 after many leaves got singed by a hot sunny day that spring before the trees were leafed out. It's done fine ever since & I've never noticed any burn marks.
Not that I'm recommending it after seeing Hank's & hearing the problems others [just about everyone but me] have had. I think I'd give in to temptation & sacrifice that one to the hosta gods at the spring hosta fertility rites, Hank...

Here's my Color Glory taken a few minutes ago. It looked better & was a little bigger a couple of years ago, but last spring I trimmed up the overhanging spirea that completely hid it. It was getting more sun than I wanted then in that spot so I moved it further south to a spot where the sun never shines. So apparently it's still trying to get used to the new spot since there's just 2 eyes now. But the leaves were larger & I think the margins were even darker in the deep shade.

I have a couple of spots the get no sun at all. I might just try a Color Glory there to see if it likes it. Not much else does.

Boy, I keep waiting for mine to go bad...but after 4 yrs. it is still looking good. I have it planted on the east side of a blue spruce and slightly west of a solid wall of tree/understory growth and it gets no sun and no wind - and looks good all year. Never had the spring burn or later creepshow. If I have time this year, will move my Super Nova and Cadillac right next to it...they always look crappy by June.

Poor Hank! Why don't you replace your CG with a doppelganger? Captain Kirk is deceptively similar to CG in looks, but in looks alone: it's a super cast iron performer. That's a 2nd year youngster in the pic; this year it'll be almost twice that size. It colours up beautifully even in reasonably deep shade.
...greening up the Great White North!!!
