Pic of the Day--Little Aurora

Post by Hank Zumach »

Hi All--For several years after getting Little Aurora in 2000 I thought I either had a bad plant or I had it growing in the wrong conditions. Based on Zilis's listing of 40x14, I was expecting more than the 10x6, 9x6, and 11x5 measurements the plant produced in its first three years. I guess I should have been paying closer attention to Lemke's listing of 12x8 because finally in 2004 it went to 16x7 and was essentially the same in 2005 at 17x7. Even for a Tokudama derivative, that is a slow growth rate. Little Aurora is aptly named, providing a nice, bright, gold mound of foliage. As with most of the Tokudamas, slugs have not been a problem.

Sounds like a good yellow to invest in! Thanks!

At least yours will grow & has gotten somewhat larger & fuller over time, Hank. I think I'm on my 3rd one now - I'd have to look at my records to make sure. But last year I combined 2 into one tiny plant with 2 tiny eyes. The largest leaves on each might have been the size of a quarter. They were planted in different locations & they had seemed to be doing well the year before. This year I'm down to one of those eyes & if the 2 leaves were combined they might be the size of a quarter. :???: I don't see myself getting another one.

Tiny Aurora, RIP

Reldon, mine from 1990 met the same fate. I moved it several times to give it better growing conditions, but it departed last year.

Mine finally died this year, never grew well.
I do have Golden Prayers that is better, and always has been, and I wonder if it is really Little Aurora because of the confusion in the trade, and it looks a lot like Sultana and Little Sunspot. I'll be growing them together this year.
I got both Little Aurora and Golden Prayers from Ruh's Homestead division. but if this one is LA, then I don't know what the other one was that died!

Well at least I'm not alone in my inablility to grow this one. LOL

Dave - I thought from reading what Zilis said about the 2 that Golden Prayers was larger than Little Aurora... :hmm:

Thanks, George - that's what I was thinking. I just didn't feel like picking up the book that's 6" from my hand to find out.

Hmmm...now I'm going to have to go look to see if my LA made it this year. It's looked pretty good in the past. :???:
Your pics sure are pretty , Hank, so whatever you're doing is working well. :D
