Pic of the Day--Golden Bullion/Golden Medallion

Post by Hank Zumach »

Hi All--Golden Bullion (1st Pic) has been providing a beautiful, bright spot in our garden since 1995. It grows just around the corner from Golden Medallion (2nd pic), bought in 1997, and they might just be the same genetic plant so I thought I'd post them together as the POTD. Golden Bullion is listed as a sport of Tokudama Flavocircinalis and Golden Medallion is listed as a sport of Tokudama Aureonebulosa. In my garden I can not see any difference between the two plants. The photos in the Library don't show any discernable differences. My GB gets up to 4 hours or so of afternoon sun while GM gets no more than 2 hours or so. Both plants are just a couple of inches short of Zilis' listing of 40x16. They both benefit from slug protection.

Both look great, Hank!! :P I've seen them in tour gardens occaisionally - I know I saw several of one of them at the botanical garden in St. Louis - but I don't think I've ever seen either of them available for sale.

I really like those!!! They look like they have heavy substance so I'm surprised they need slug protection. Thanks for the pics!!

Both look great!

I'm sure you've mentioned this before, Hank, but could you say again, how you protect from slug damage. I've just this year started having problems and wondering what someone like yourself that has had problems does for this?

Thanks for any help you can offer :D

Debbie--I agree. Tokudamas have great substance but for some reason these two had some slug damage before I came across:

Jane--Deadline MP (MP=Mini Pellets). I have been using it for 8-10 years with great results. We have a very large area planted with hostas and other perennials and the pellets work great since they can be broadcast over the beds. After I had been using them for about two years, I found I could have nice results with only a sparse application. Before I came across the Deadline I was using Snail and Slug Killer from K-Mart. It worked OK but it comes in a powder form and I had to apply a small pile or two under each hosta. That took a LOT of work in our garden. Also the powder would wash away with an inch or less of rain but the Deadline holds up through at least 3 inches.

Does this also kills worm then? I just worry b/c we feed birds (wild) that a bird might get into this, or eat a worm that ate it?

I never realized that they may be one and the same. I don't think I have them planted anywhere near each other. Your pics are gorgeous and I am partial to the yellow/golds anyway. :D

Jane--I can't say for sure but I would be surprised if worms had any interest in the slug bait. We have many, many birds here and none of them have ever seemed sickly in any way.
