Pic of the Day--Sitting Pretty

Hi All--I really like Sitting Pretty, but only for the first couple of months of the season. After that it does what so many white centered varieties do: burn out, get full of holes, and generally turn ratty looking. The photo happens to be one taken exactly one year ago today so you can imagine how bad the plant looks by the end of the summer. This is a variety that probably belongs in my Loser's Lane. I have two Sitting Prettys, both grow in mostly shaded spots and they have usually measured between 17x7 and 24x8. Zilis lists it at 18x6 and Lemke's registration listing is 8x4.

Sorry, but I agree, it's not even close to most of your beauties. I'd say if it looks like that this early, it would have a back seat in my losers lane!

So what was it that chewed it into swiss cheese?

Jane--I don't know. A number of these white centered hostas have very poor substance and I think almost any critter that comes along can bite through the tissue. I have the same kind of problem with a few non-white centered varieties.

By the way, the plant in the photo looks as bad today as it did last year at this time.

Thanks Hank. It's too bad some hosta get eaten so badly, but then again, they leave the others alone when they find these so tasty That makes them worth something I suppose
