Hi All--Well, today's variety, Gaiety, is yet another example of confusion in the hosta world, I guess. Zilis lists the size of this plant at 40x12, Lemke's Data Base, which uses registration info, lists it at 16x10 and the Hosta Library gives "sm" as its size. Judging from the photos in the Library , my plant has appearance true to the variety. But when it comes to size......in the five years 2001 to 2005 it was 50x27, 47x20, 55x22, 60x26 and 58x22. I would like to hear from others about the size of their plant. I have had the plant since 1994, growing in a spot that gets up to a couple of hours of direct sun in the middle of the summer. Slugs are a bit of a problem with Gaiety but that should not be used as a reason to not have this very attractive variety.

Perhaps the person who registered it, only grew it a few years before doing so and didn't know how big it could really get?
Pretty hosta.

Oooh, I like this one! Haven’t seen it before that I know of.
I have pretty much given up paying any attention at all to what size a hosta is “supposed” to be - there is such a difference in every reference. I plant them for present size and how much I guess they will grow in 3 yrs. I dig all plants from each bed every 3-4 yrs. to refresh the soil and rearrange, so they eventually end up where they fit best (hehe).
I do get surprised occasionally...one of my Elvis Lives is as big as my 4 yr. old S&S...looks like it is trying to shove S&S out of the way!!!
