Comparing: Jade Cascade/Elvis Lives

Post by Linda P »

For VT: Here are a couple of pics from last year. I'll do some measuring and maybe get another couple of pics.
If I had to choose between these two for a wavy-leaved hosta, I would have a hard time deciding.

I would take Jade Cascade - hands down! It's my favorite hosta of all time (Tidewater is almost neck in neck now!). When mature..............WOW! :o

Forgot to add that Elvis does NOT live for me. I don't know why but I am on my third year w/ this ONE EYE plant and it has never, ever grown! I got it in a trade and wonder if it is really not what it was billed as.
Help! I'm being held hostage!

Those two are completely different - EL is a bluish medium, JC is a light green/chartreuse giant: beware! If you have room, get both, and while you're at it, throw in Venetian Blue - a small version of EL - as well.

Andrea, sorry Elvis doesn't like your garden. Maybe if you chopped up a few banana peels? :) Mine is about 20" tall by 56" wide. I agree, JC is impressive at maturity. Mine went backwards this year, hopefully just due to the late spring frost. Odd that you mention it as competing for tops on your favorite list with Tidewater. I have it planted next to Ultramarine, a Tidewater podmate. They're both impressive!

Diane, I agree..the only thing they share in common is that both are rather fountain shaped and wavy edged. I can also think of Permanent Wave as similar to EL, though not blue. The only one I have that is similar to Jade Cascade is Dragon Wings, which is not nearly mature in my garden yet.

I meant to include this pic of my old cat Speedy hiding under Jade Cascade. Last night I took a pic of an EL leaf on a JC leaf. By this time of year, my EL isn't very blue anymore, but you can still see a little of it, even with the flash. There is a huge difference in the leaf sizes.

Wow!!! Linda, those are great photos and do clearly show the difference that I was unable to see while just going through the Hosta Library site!
I keep the Hosta Library site open on another tab while going through the posts here so that I can learn as much as possible and get familiar with the different hostas. Guess I'll have to do more than just look at the pictures!!!
Thanks for the education :D

Wow, Linda, those sure are impressive plants you've grown. I love the form of Jade Cascade, wish I had some room for it. Just to add to the discussion on the wavy leafed varieties, another one to consider is Bridal Veil. I got mine from Chris as a bonus last year and it looks amazing this year. It still looks like it did when it came up in the spring, has great form, is bluish/green with a little cream margin and is wavy. Really like this one. :P

Paul, YES...Bridal Veil is another with the same sort of flowing mound shape. It happens to be from one of my friends, Mr Bob Hird of Dubuque. I have a couple of really nice ones growing in my garden, and no pics of it to share. I'm really way behind on taking hosta pics this year. Too much wind-whipping, cutworm munching, etc.

And adding Dragon Wings to the topic

Post by hagranger »

Jade Cascade is definitely prettier than EL ... just look at this leaf! And Dragon Wings' leaf ... another beauty ...
Oops, forgot to add that Altarra took the photo of the Jade Cascade leaf ... don't want people thinking I take such good photos.

Wow, Dragon Wings is nice! I think the pie crust feature is "growing" on me. I do like the deep veining on the dark green though. Can't beat the name...I have a dragon hanging from my rearview mirror - he's seen every one of my cars. :)

Helen, your Dragon Wings has a lot of character . . .unlike mine which is very plain, as are 3 of the 4 pictured at HL. Guess some of them are just duds?

The more sunlight the better the edge ... at least that's what I found ... however, DW will also burn if not careful so high diffused shade is the best for it ... provided by a maple tree (neighbor's) at the old house.
Here's a shot of a younger Dragon Wings (three years ago) that doesn't show as much of a ruffled edge ...
I suspect some of the photos of DW in Hosta Library are of immature plants.
By the way ... thats' Komodo Dragon behind the first photo I showed ... a definite leaf and size difference.

I FINALLY managed to get through my hosta photos from 2006 ... here are a few more of Jade Cascade ... It is such a beautiful hosta in my opinion ... great arching leaves and is a stand alone in any garden.

Helen, thanks for the great pics of Jade Cascade, and also for reminding me what Dragon Wings will look like when it grows up. Mine was on the way, and then I gave in to begging from my youngest DD and gave her part of it. The rest of the plant promptly reverted to juvenile form.
I'm going to make sure that I get some winter mulch on my Jade Cascade this year. I don't want it to get frost bitten again next year!
