Pic of the Day--Alligator Shoes

Post by Hank Zumach »

Hi All--Alligator Shoes (now where did that name come from?) is a nice, versatile variety. Growing in a very shaded area of our Friendship Garden, it has taken on a definite green coloring. The plant that we had growing in a sunnier spot that was killed in our vandalism attack had a definite blue coloring that I found more appealing. The photos in the Hosta Library show a range of colors. Its size has been 23x10 and 28x14, about right for a plant that is listed as "medium" at maturity.

I just got my Alligator Shoes this spring from Chris. While I had seen it alot in different pics and liked it, pics just don't do it justice. The colors and shape are very unique, I think. It has been in a pot all season and has doubled since I got it in June. It's a beauty! Thanks for the pics, Hank.

I guess this one will have to be on my list now that I have an 8 foot gator in the backyard. :) We just moved to an appartment on a large lake and this big guy just swam on by. Couldn't tell if he had shoes though...

I agree that the pictures don't really capture the look. The Blue color is very nice, but the rugosity (Like Elegans)combined with the close veins on the elegant leaf (Like Montanas) with the nice creamy yellow margin really make this a stand out Hosta. I never have trouble identifying it. I saw one when shopping with Dad a couple years ago, and rather than tell him I'd give him a piece of mine, I told him to get the nice big one for about $10, which was a bargain price.

I like the veins on this one too. I don't have a recent pic, but here's one from a couple years ago. :D

This is one of my favorites. :D It is a real beauty and looks great well into fall. I've had mine 4 years and pretty much ignore it and it's lovely! A real winner in my book. I can't wait to see it in a few years.

That's a nice pic, too, Joan. That, to me, looks closer to what mine is.

But I tried to take photos today, and you just can't get the blue to show up right. Hanks pics really show the bumples well, too. It's a beauty!

That's a beautiful pic, too, Poppi!

I didn't see it before, as I went to post and discovered I didn't have a pic of AS. You had time to post while I was taking the photo! I see I have great things to look forward to with this one!

Here's a pic of mine from 05. Last year it was quite a bit smaller, but I didn't take the time to dig it up. This year it came up with 4 or 5 small leaves. I did go dig it up and found that most of the roots were gone. Dang voles must have found it! I potted up what was left, and just replanted it in a new home last week. It's recovering nicely, so hopefully in a few years it will look like this again.

I like this one a lot... I can't do photos right now due to computer problems, but I can tell you you can get ready to move it if you believed the medium designation... mine is a pretty tall plant about 44" in diameter this year...

I had it on the list of ordered plants, but the nursery had a crop failure on them this year. There's always next year.
