Pic of the Day--Regal Splendor

Post by Hank Zumach »

Hi All--Regal Splendor is aptly named. This sport of Krossa Regal carries on the family tradition of being one of the best additions to any collection. Its coloring and upright form make for a plant that easily passes the 20 foot rule. The plant growing in our Friendship Garden started out a diminutive 12x8 and grew to 19x9 this summer. I expect the plant to eventually reach a size in the area of 58x26 although Zilis lists it at 72x30. I am showing photos of the plant in its first two years in the Friendship Garden and a photo of a mature plant.

I love my Regal Splendor. This is a two-year old division from a friend's plant. It has grown really well and the flower scapes are truly Regal - about 4 ft high.

Funny, but I never really noticed them on the plant, but only in the pics. However, that plant will be moved to a newly prepared garden next spring and it will have a chance to be a really regal centrepiece. And I'll watch those different leaves. They might indeed prove to be very interesting.

Regal Splendor is one of my fav's. :P
Pic is from 2006. It's taken from above, so it doesn't capture the true beauty of it's vase-like habit.

The very first plants I bought for my garden were three Regal Spendor Hostas. I just love how fast they have grown (well, 2 of the 3), and how they seem to take the least amount of slug damage in the whole garden. They are particularly pretty in the early summer, when the vase shape is so pronounced (seems like they lose some of that as the summer progresses?). Here is one of mine, after the third summer in the ground. Can't wait to see it next year.
