Pic of the Day--Permanent Wave

Post by Hank Zumach »

Hi All--Permanent Wave is a really nice looking plant, at least for those of us who like wavy, rippled edges. There is the usual question about the size of a mature plant. The Hosta Library lists it as "small", Lemke's registration listing is 32x12, and Zilis lists 54x18. We had a mature plant that was in line with the registration size. The plant in our Friendship Garden has had an excellent growth rate, going from 17x8 in 2006 to 30x8 this past summer. I am showing two photos of the Friendship Garden plant and one of the mature plant.

This is a REALLY great plant for me - if I lost it I would replace it immediately. To lessen the chance of loss, I have two spares - I really would hate to lose this one. The deep, dark, rich forest green is unique in my garden, and it really sets off variegated plants wonderfully. It has great, stiff substance that hold the beautifully ruffled leaves in perfect form. I have my main plant (53 eyes) in a grouping with Filigree, Maui Buttercups, Gold Standard (the 106-eye one), Sun Power, Carnival and Great Expectations. The second one I have right in front of a big Abba Dabba Do - that is really nice. The third is in my favorite grouping: Jade Cascade, Maekawa, Vim & Vigor, Radio Waves, Invincible (and some green & white ones). When you plant really nice green ones of such great diversity in size, form, texture, leaf shape and such a wide range of greens it is stunning.

Everybody needs at least one of these!
