Pic of the Day--El Capitan

Post by Hank Zumach »

Hi All--I am surprised that today's variety, El Capitan, is not mentioned more often on the garden lists I belong to, particularly since it has been available for at least 20 years. I am expecting ours to develop into a very attractive plant. It certainly is off to a nice start since it was added to our Friendship Garden this past summer. At a size of 17x11 it has a ways to go to reach an expected mature size of about 50x24.

I have to say I passed on it several times, until I saw a mature plant somewhere. Sitting in the pot at a nursery, it looks so very much like many other cream edged greens.
When it grows up, it's a whole different story. Mine is just a couple years old, but doing well so far.

Just another pretty hosta, easy to grow and looks better every year . . . .nice mound form, upright leaves. This one has been in a pot for 5 years now. Everything gets bigger except my yard. ~sigh~
