Pic of the Day--Collector's Choice

Post by Hank Zumach »

Hi All--Today's plant is aptly named. Collector's Choice is one of those cultivars that will never be sold in a Big Box Store or even in very many nurseries. But for the hostaholic adding to their rock garden, Collector's Choice would be a welcome addition. The plant's size is described as a "mini" which should mean that its clump height would be between 4 and 6 inches. Our Friendship Garden plant apparently needs several more years to get to that size since it only measured 4x2 in its first year and 6x1 this past summer. The plant is also described as "globular", a characteristic that our plant has not yet begun to exhibit, but then, neither do the plants shown in the Hosta Library. In Hostadom, there is always next year.

Hank, it's not indicated one way or the other in the HL, but your pictures tend to make me think this is a cultivar with a rhizomatous growth behavior. Am I correct in that assumption?

Hi--I don't know but I understand why you would think that, based on how the clump is forming.
