Pic of the Day--Tattoo
Hi All--Today's variety, Tattoo, has caused a lot of comments because of its unique Maple Leaf marking within the leaf, neither a margin or center variegation. A number of owners have had trouble keeping Tattoo alive. Here in our zone 4B garden, I have mulched it in the fall to help it through the winter. That extra care seems to have made the plant reasonably happy as does its growing in a spot that gets about 3 hours of mid day sun. Since I got the plant in 2002 it has measured 5x5, 7x4, 10x5, 14x7, 13x9 and 17x8. That puts its size a bit beyond what might be expected for a plant Lemke lists at 12x6. Slugs have not been a problem but very few of our plants are bothered since I do a couple of applications of Deadline MP each year.

You've got a nice one. I've removed it from my wish list after I heard that so many people lost theirs or had it go entirely green. If my space is limited, it makes more sense to go for more enthusiastic growers.

I received a decent sized one in last year's Secret Trade. Unfortunately it had a MAJOR nematode issue and was given a bleach bath for that problem. Hopefully it will have pulled through the ordeal and the winter and I'm hoping to see the first signs of it nosing back up in another couple of months or so. Keep my fingers crossed.

Hank, that Tattoo is gorgeous! This will be mine's 3rd year; it didn't do much last year but at least it came up!
Deadline MP? That's why your hostas stay looking so nice. Some of mine last year looked like they were full of buckshot! I sprayed faithfully with the ammonia solution but only actually saw 3 of the little buggers. I just couldn't get up early enough and spraying in the dark with a flashlight in one hand was a disaster. Do you buy it in bulk locally or on-line?

Pia--Wisconsin. 3 hours of Wisconsin sun. At these times of the National Football League playoffs, this is an important difference. GO GREEN BAY PACKERS!!!
