Pic of the Day--Sun's Glory

Post by Hank Zumach »

Hi All--Today's plant was a real surprise for me. In the fall of 1999 I purchased two identical Sunshine Glorys and planted them in different areas of the garden. In the spring of 2000 one of them emerged with a completely different appearance. The entire clump had sported to Sun's Glory (or at least what appears to be Sun's Glory.) Until then I had believed that sporting only happened on one eye. Since that time I have also had an entire 5-6 eye division of Gold Standard sport to Richland Gold over a winter. Sun's Glory has great color, particularly if brightness is your criteria. It receives about 2-3 hours of direct sun and has grown a bit slowly. It's size in 2001 was 31x21 and then it went 41x29, 42x26, 53x27, 56x31, 52x36 and 58x32. That is right in line with Zilis' listing of 64x32. It has been free of slug problems. The photos are from 2002 and 2007.

Very pretty, Hank! I do find it surprising that the whole clump reverted like that! I always thought it was a gradual process. :???:
