Pic of the Day--Northern Exposure

Post by Hank Zumach »

Hi All--Northern Exposure is one of my favorite plants in the early part of the season when its margins are a very attractive yellow/gold. That color gradually turns creamy white as the season wears on. The first pic was taken in mid May, the 2nd in late June. I got the plant in 1998 and have been growing in a spot that gets an hour or two of mid-day sun, depending on the time of the year. After all this time it is still increasing in size. Starting in 2001 it has measured 56x26, 60x23 59x26, 47x48, 60x27 and 67x26. Lemke's Database lists it at 66x36. Slugs have not been a problem since I started using Deadline MP.

Ahhhh...what a great pic! I had to move mine two years ago. I didn't know when I planted it how large it could get. The move set it back the first year, but it was regaining size last summer. It's a real beaut in the spring.

Great pix, both of you! Northern Exposure is a favorite Hosta (cause I love the big ones :D )
I can't seem to find a recent picture, though. This one is from 2005, and it's not in so much shade now, as the ice storm thinned my trees considerably where it's planted.

All great pix of Northern Exposure. :D I had to get one after seeing it posted a couple years ago. Mine's planted in total shade and not growing so fast.

All of those Northern Exposure pix are just heavenly!
I have two of them and neither of mine looks as nice as any of the ones pictured. Mine are getting a fair amount of shade, maybe more light is needed.
