Not Pic of the Day 5-30-08 Jim Matthews
Our late spring - we're about two weeks behind our usual garden cycle - is having some advantages for me. I'm usually too busy getting ready for my sale to enjoy the early changes in the garden.
This year I feel like the pretty girl in sixth grade... the one who can just change her mind whenever and have a different favorite every day.
Yesterday it was Jim Matthews. This one was registered a decade ago by Barry Sligh, of New Zealand fame, so I'm suprised its name isn't Kiwi Jim Matthews. Actually, though I'm sure Jim Matthews was a nice person, neither name is really catchy... still, this baby really commands attention in the garden right now!
Sligh registered it as a selfed sieboldiana seedling. It's a light-centered variegated sieboldiana, putting it into the same general category as Great Expectations, Borwick Beauty, Queen of Islip, Super Nova, etc. - but it is different from all of them.
It's impossible to describe the colors as it is changing all the time... it fits best into the category of "misted center." It has grown surprisingly well for me, though others have reported problems. I fostered my extra one out to my SIL and she lost it the first winter - expensive mistake!

I really like this one. I've had my eye on it for a while. Someday I'd like to have a family hosta bed with everyone having a hosta bearing their name. DS#1's name is Matthew and DS#3's middle name is James.
