Lost a link to 2-page article & diseased Atlantis (UPDATE)
Friends,
On my work computer at my previous job, I had a link to a nice 2-page article on HVX from some university Ag department (pdf file). It referenced Chris, so I know it was a good one! The one-pager from Josh is o.k.; the 3-pager and 4-pager from OSU and Arkansas are more awkward to deal with.
I'm taking it to a tony nursery nearby (taken over last year by a larger operation that had never run a nursery before), where I bought Atlantis last year that came up awfully infected. I'm going to try an Agdia test strip on it to be sure, but the plant is certainly going back for refund! Luckily, it was planted in a location well-separated from other hostas, and I don't recall it blooming last year (the risk of cutting green scapes and transferring sap that way).

What sick with HVX looking hosta. Glad it did not infect any other hostas

Re: Lost a link to 2-page article & virused Atlantis
Hi,
Sorry for this experience. I might question the plant being Atlantis. In any form, that is unbelievable in a yrs. time. I am sorry to say, my head is in a near tail spin when it comes to Hosta these days. I do wish you the best.
This is not a joke. It has been waying heavy on my mind. There should be a class action suit filed. Presently I am not able to lead in such. To me,it seems the suppliers are waying heavy on the virus showing later in the garden, then there are several ways to get out of any responsibility.
You are doing the right thing "TRASH THAT PLANT"

Yes, I was stunned that a plant that looked fine last year when it was new looked like this when it came up.

Hi Dave,
I bought one there too and never thought it would be likely to be infected. I'll be testing mine too, but it isn't out far enough yet to see anything. Can you get more of a close-up of it and put it in a little larger here or Email me a big version?
BTW, I spent a fair amount of time teaching that place about HVX and then they change hands and all the people who were watching for it leave. Oh, well.

Tigger -
Can't find specific article but did find lots out there. I searched for Hosta HVX then .pdf to cut it down a little. Only one that might be what your looking for is below....hopefully someone will find the article you're looking for.

UPDATE
I took a leaf (almost a week old, but still seemed fresh enough) to Warren Pollack for an Agdia test, and it did not test positive.
Any other kind of virus or disease likely to cause this? As I said, the plant is no longer in my garden; the nursery looked at it and took it back without question.
Notably every eye is affected.

Nobody's got any help for me? (on the link or on this diseased Atlantis)
Re: Lost a link to 2-page article & diseased Atlantis (UPDATE)
Sorry I can't be of any help... it sure LOOKS like HVX and that is troubling. It makes one wonder if there is there another virus on our horizon that is going to cause us headaches.....

Not sure if the leaf being a week old would have an affect on the test or not. It's possible that the virus began to die when the leaf was cut.
However, keep in mind a negative test with Agdia (assuming it was from one of their test kits) could still give a negative result even with HVX present. You need to have enough there for the test to give a positive result. If the virus began to die after it was cut, then tested a week later, it's possible that the virus fell below the test minimum for a positive result.
Just tossing out ideas....
Nothing on an article link, sorry. I get distracted when looking for articles as I start to read each of them.

Well, we let that hole sit empty until yesterday. Hopefully whatever caused this problem is gone, but we'll keep a close eye on what we put there.
Thanks.

Re: Lost a link to 2-page article & diseased Atlantis (UPDATE)
found another 2 page pdf
http://www.oznet.ksu.edu/library/plant2/EP132.pdf
Also, looking through the Hosta Handbook at 'Opipara' virus. Although it seems from the Hostapedia that Zilis thinks this may be an early form of HVX. Atlantis comes down from Sunpower. No idea it's related to H. Opipara.
I don't know......

Re: Lost a link to 2-page article & diseased Atlantis (UPDATE)
Hi David,
That discoloration definitely looked weird, so it wouldn't surprise me if it was some kind of virus. At least the nursery took it back easily enough.
If the leaf started to dessicate or brown on the edges or if it started to rot at all then it may have been too degraded to still be tested. If you kept it in a ziploc bag in the fridge for a week it would have still been a viable sample.
We'll probably never know for sure what it was, but just in case it was something other than HVX I wouldn't put another plant in that exact spot.
Hopefully you won't see anything like it again.
Chris

I think is a ArMV ( arabis mosaic wirus). It is not murderous for hostas.
