Well, maybe not, then. Bert, huh?

Van Dyke's character was Bert. Maybe Bert & Ernie for the two sides. And they wear striped shirts.

Some new pictures:
What I have called the "dark side" is looking more like Sealth but with a white edge.

Took some shots today in late afternoon light and the plant is dry for a change.

Re: Odd sport of Minuteman
I split this plant up on June 1. I realized I am 2 and half months behind in reporting.
The lighter side developed another eye so I dug up the plant and separated the light and dark sides. Of course in doing this I ripped off the new eye. Stuck it in a pot - all two little leaves of it. After 2 and a half months I still have 1 leaf, so something must be going on to keep it alive.
The dark side had five eyes which I split into two segments (2 & 3 eyes). I put the three pieces back in the same area and it seems to worked out. The lighter side had a nice set of flowers. One of the dark pieces put up a small flower shoot.
The lighter side is starting to darken up - I will be putting up those photos.

Re: Odd sport of Minuteman
This one showed up rather strange this year. It had some those all white sprouts a few years ago but they died off quickly. These look small but I have been cutting pieces off of them over the years. I'm waiting for a nice striped leaf to unfurl on one of the others.

You have one screwed up plant, but it sure is fun to see all the interesting leaves it puts out over the years. Keep taking photos, you have a very cool hosta.

The voles got to 2 other pieces of this plant. Here are some photos today.
I need to get a good photo of that all yellow leaf - they usually disintegrate quickly.Ed McHugh, Sicklerville NJ

Re: Odd sport of Minuteman
Ed, did they ever flower and set any pods/seeds? I would love to see a seedling from this, to see if it has streaks or not.
Re: Odd sport of Minuteman
Hi Carol, it has flowered but never set pods.
I got lucky and found a fragment of #3 the voles left behind. It's potted up now.

Re: Odd sport of Minuteman
Darn deer took this one out. I had been neglecting the fencing in that area. They damaged Mr Blue and Gold Standard in that area. You can the damage to Gold Standard at the top.
I took off a stable hunk of this early this season. As an experiment I put the piece in a trough and put the trough in a clear plastic bag and sealed it. I then put the bug under lights 24/7. It's doing pretty well today after a couple of months in the bag. It looks like a clone of Francee. The mother plant has another good sized piece like this that needs to come off. I had another piece like this a couple of years ago planted in the garden and the leaves can get pretty big on it - it was a nice plant until the voles got it.

Re: Odd sport of Minuteman
Still here but not looking that good. I took off a huge hunk that looked like Francee. I potted them up since some still have light streaking.
That big yellow leaf will disintegrate quickly - you can see the bottom ones falling apart already. The next leaf up should have the best coloration.

Re: Odd sport of Minuteman
The "best" leaf is up a little more now. I'm surprised the yellow leaves have lasted this long. Maybe lots of rain and cool temps are keeping it around. The next few days will be hot and sunny so we will see.

One of the "stable" hunks I took off last season is back to its 'Minuteman' roots - usually the stable hunks look more like 'Francee'.

Re: Odd sport of Minuteman
Just realized I hadn't posted this one this season. I need to pull the stable hunks off (and weed).
This is the 10th season for this plant - it's a shame the voles took out two other hunks of this. Best leaf this season: Behind 'Gold Standard' in this photo.

Re: Odd sport of Minuteman
I haven't shown this plant this season because its colors "failed" to show up. Normally there would be a leaf three light stripes and other random colors. But the streaking failed and all it put up were leaves where the entire center was the color of the light stripes. I knew later in the season that light color would darken but the plant just isn't the same this season.
Very early in the season when I knew it had a "problem". A little later with some damage to the first leaves. I removed some of those more stable pieces and potted them. And here it is a couple of days ago with a new flush of leaves without the streaking. The early leaves have darkened-up. Here it is with the more stable pieces.
