Hosta of the Day 'Red Hot Flash' - Post Your Pics

Post by ViolaAnn »

Today's hosta, 'Red Hot Flash'. Mine was new spring 2006 and the first year it looked so sickly, I thought I would lose it, but a summer in a pot and regular infusions of Epsom Salts brought it round. It forms what I can an unruly mound.
It's a tetraploid, and emerges with bright yellow leaves margined in green. The bright yellow gradually fades to a chartreuse. Beautiful red petioles. Fertile. This photo from July 15.

Size: Small (21"w x 12"h)
Origin: Sport of H. 'Peedee Gold Flash'

I have often wondered about Epsom salts does it make them greener or just act as a fertilizer?

Can help when there is magnesium deficiency in the plant - characterized in my case by pale leaves and prominent green veins. I just looked at the first pic I have of it and it didn't seem as extreme as I remember, but I worried about HVX at the beginning.

This one continues to be an unruly mound in my garden. Not sure about keeping it long-term as space is tight.

This was the last picture of 'Red Hot Flash' before I removed it from my garden. It's gotten smaller each year and is attacked by slugs and nematodes. Picture July 16, 2014.
