Daily Hosta #1 - 'Popo' - add your pics

Post by ViolaAnn »

Today's first hosta, 'Popo'. This is a cute mini which I received in July from a friend.

Description: tiny, heart-shaped leaves are blue, forming a neat, compact mound.
Size: Mini (9"w x 5"h)
Origin: parentage unknown
Flowers: lavender, tubular
Source: from a friend

Too early to comment on growth rate. This picture from July 29.

How cute I havn't had much experience with the minis apart from one venture with Pandoras Box which was in my opinion the cutest ever. I kept it in its pot and in a small wall basket, alas it got smaller and smaller 'till ot gave up the ghost. The minis are vary expensive over here I'm a little afraid to try another. Is there a secret to frowing them I have heard poor quality soil helps and no fertilisation?? Any one help me with this?

Popo is a favorite of mine. It grows well without any trouble or special care. I've taken dozens of divisions
off mine over the years to send home with visitors who find it charming.

Mark, I grow a lot of minis. They're in the ground, in my good midwestern US corn-belt black loam soil.
The key, it seems to me, is to keep them from heaving. Several years back I started using pea gravel
as mulch in the mini bed, and they seem to love it. I have not lost a mini in either of the two mini beds
since I started using the pea gravel.

Here's what I think is Popo. No clue where I got it from, Walmart possibly from one of those bags. About 2-3 years old.

And it's not a Mini, mines almost as big as a mountain!

'Popo' grows steadily, if not quickly. I just gave it a pot all by itself rather than sharing with another plant and I'll sink that pot into larger planters or troughs. Photo July 8, 2014.

Here are a couple photos of mine. Last year it threw a streak, not so this year. It isn't a fast grower for me but not disappointing.

2016 update - quite a bit of growth. A good move to keep it in a pot and move the pot back and forth from garden to trough.

2017 update - July 19. I've kept this one in a pot and I sink the pot into a trough.
