Daily Hosta #1 - Lemon Frost

Post by redcrx »

I'll add a couple of "L" hosta to the list. One of my favorites because of the multiple flowering periods is Lemon Frost. I have a group of these in flower now.

Got mine from Linda P about a month ago. Still looking ragged, but you can see some new growth at the bottom. Excited to see it next year. Didn't know it was a multiple flower so makes it even better! Picture taken today and sorry the lighting is horrible.

I have two big ones that seemed to be in flower all of last season but this year only flowered once. The ones here are from a third big one that I broke-up this year for my new bed. They didn't get a chance to flower earlier.

Last year this was the last hosta flower in my garden but I think this season the normal late flowering ones will hold out the longest. It will be fun to watch who lasts the longest.

Name: H. 'Lemon Frost'

Description: Moderately wavy and lightly twisted, lance-shaped leaves emerge yellow and change to greenish-yellow. Heavily rippled with narrow pure white margin.
Size: Small (24"w x 10"h)
Origin: sport of H. ‘Lemon Lime’
Flowers: pale lavender, tubular flowers with purple stripes in mid summer.
Added to garden: Spring 2007

This is a VERY fast-growing mini. Blooms prolifically as well and was the first hosta to bloom in my garden this year. Some of it had a second bloom near the end of the season. I've been dividing it for a border.

Both pics taken July 18.

Ann, I see one of your plants is showing an instability with the width of the margin on one side of the leaf. I took a couple of divisions earlier this summer that are doing the same thing.

'Lemon Frost' just does that on a regular basis.

Still have 5 sizable clumps of 'Lemon Frost'. Need to divide them further to get the border to fill out.

There's a pic above showing 'X-rated' beside my "border" of 'Lemon Frost'. Well that 'X-rated' is in danger of being swallowed up by the border. I'll be moving it soon. The border has filled out and when it's all in bloom it really is lovely.

Here's a close look at it July 11, 2014.

And the entire border on July 16.

Found tiny Lemon Frost and Lemon Lime in the garden today in flower - they sit right next to each other.
