Daily Hosta #2 - 'Blue Mouse Ears family' - Add your pics

Post by ViolaAnn »

'Blue Mouse Ears' has a large and extended family of first and second generation sports. The list at http://myhostas.be/sports/index.htm# now numbers 18 and there may be more.

Blue Mouse Ears (bb)
-> Blue Mouse Ears Supreme (?) -> Mighty Moe (wb)
-> Cat and Mouse (yb)
-> Dancing Mouse (bb)
-> Green Mouse Ears (gg)
-> Mighty Mouse (yc)
-> Mouse Tracks (os)
-> Mouse Trap (wb)
-> One Iota (gc) -> One Iota Supreme (os) -> Desert Mouse (cb)
-> Lucky Mouse (bc)
-> Pure Heart (yg)
-> Royal Mouse Ears (os) -> Frosted Mouse Ears (gw)
-> Holy Mouse Ears (wb)
-> Snow Mouse (?) -> Funny Mouse (bw)

In my garden, there are: 'Cat and Mouse' (though it keeps sporting to blue), 'Mighty Mouse' (which to me looks nearly identical to 'Frosted Mouse Ears'), another 'Mighty Mouse' which has confused colouring - I've dubbed it 'Mighty Confused Mouse', 'Mouse Trap' (which looks like 'Snow Mouse'), 'Royal Mouse Ears', 'Frosted Mouse Ears', 'Holy Mouse Ears' and 'Snow Mouse'. I let them live in a planter (along with 'Country Mouse' from a different family) under the eyes of a watchful cat.

Going through my "mouse" pictures I don't have many individual shots. The Mighty Mouse were purchased late in the season.

When I was putting my group shots up I mistakenly thought the One Iota was Mighty Mouse. Then when I was labeling them I saw I had One Iota Supreme but could find One Iota in the photo. I then went back to my garden map and saw the problem - One Iota has to be next to One Iota Supreme so what I had label as Mighty Mouse was One Iota. So, to me, One Iota is hard to tell apart from Mighty Mouse. And Frosted Mouse Ears is similar also.

I have become totally disenchanted with this family and don't plan to acquire any more. There are so many subtle variations and so many of them really all look alike and then there is the instability of the lot. I'll keep growing the ones I have, but no more. I DID move the large planter that holds my collection into better light this year and I was rewarded with bloom on several of them.

And a few more -
'Mighty Mouse' 2 - last year I called it Mighty CONFUSED Mouse because it was all mixed up in colour, but this year it was mostly normal. June 19.

Almost missed this one - 'Cat and Mouse'. The tiny eye was the only one showing proper colour and it died back during the season. It's all blue but smaller than BME. June 26

Winter 2012-13, I put my entire planter into my enclosed (with windows) but unheated porch. I've successfully overwintered a few hostas there before. But I lost many of my mice. In spite of my vow to not buy more, I bought 'Church Mouse' in 2013 and 'Pure Heart' in 2014.

'Blue Mouse Ears' survived, or some of it did. It was severely damaged and much smaller in 2013. Looking better in 2014 and bloomed well.

Here's 'Church Mouse'. New 2013. It hasn't grown much at all, but is still looking healthy.

'Frosted Mouse Ears' survived the freezing and looks OK but didn't bloom.

One of my 'Mighty Mouse' divisions survived. The other did not. But this one looks OK.

'Pure Heart' was new this year - 2014 and so far seems to be one of the most vigorous "mice" I've had.
Pure_Heart-2014-140809s.jpg
'Royal Mouse Ears' is a few years old. It's barely grown at all, but at least it's still streaked.

And 'Snow Mouse' survived that brutal winter, but last year it was nearly all blue. This year it is totally blue. But smaller leaves than BME.

There are so many in this family now that I think we should likely make separate threads for the individual family members. A few already have their own threads.
