Daily Hosta - 'Fire and Ice' - Add your pics.

Post by ViolaAnn »

Name: H. 'Fire and Ice' - 2012

Description: white-centered leaves, with a wide streaky dark-green margin.
Size: Small-medium
Origin: Hans Hansen/Shady Oaks Nursery 1999. Sport of H. 'Patriot'
Flowers: Pale lavender in mid summer.

Source: a friend
Added to garden: Early July 2012
Notes: Cutworms were rampant in eastern Ontario in spring 2012 and they ravaged my friend's garden too. But this small division survived the summer and will be planted soon.

This one is stunning in spring an absolute spectacular eye catcher. It does (as do most white centres) suffer from melt out when it gets warmer though. I have heard it's a decent size maker for a white centre, will see how mine gets along next year.

Lovely white seed pods. Are the seeds viable?

OMG Pia, what language are you trying to teach us now  I can understand it, but are you saying that your iPad is autocorrecting your spelling? That has to be terrible when you are trying to type in English and it wants to correct you, so I'll translate here :D

So you thought it was the slowest hosta in the world, it hardy grew for years. Then Hank Zumach told us how many hours of sun his got and wind was in shade for protection.
Moved mine to a lot of Nordic sun and it became a very lovely hosta.
Planted in the right place... One of the best

Back onto the topic, I could never grow Fire and Ice well and have completely given up on it myself. Loyalist survives here, but does not thrive. Some people have great luck with this one in some bright light but also in very wet locations. I'm tempted to move my Loyalist into the swamp where they will get bright light and never dry out.

Normally I cannot come close to the magnificent specimens you colder zoned people can grow in your gardens, but here I am going to brag a bit. Here's mine. It is in a 3 gal pot and getting very overcrowded, so I will have to divide it next spring. I've had this one since 2007, never divided, just up potted as necessary.

2015 - Aug 02. This one gets a LOT of sun this year as we had to take down a tree. I was pleasantly surprised to see that it thrived. In 2012, this was a one-eye division and it's shown a lot of growth. As I write this, it has a huge bud. I'm not likely to get seeds though as it's so late in the season.

2017 update - still doing well with lots of sun. About to start getting filtered shade though as the Mountain Ash volunteer is now large enough to start giving a bit of shade. This picture July 19.
