Hosta of the Day 'Sitting Pretty' - Post Your Pics

Post by ViolaAnn »

Today's hosta is 'Sitting Pretty'. It was added to my garden spring of 2007 and it sat there looking really pretty but not growing beyond 1 single eye until this year when it finally grew. It's not large at all compared to 'Diana Remembered' and 'Fujibotan' which are next to it.

This picture was taken July 18. The flower was taken July 24.

Name: H. 'Sitting Pretty'

Description: Clump of lance shaped glossy leaves which have bright yellow centres surrounded by a stunning dark green border.
Size: Small (8"w x 4"h)
Origin: H. 'Reiko' x H. 'Amy Aden' (P. Aden 1987)
Flowers: dark lavender flowers are beautifully striped in dark purple and bloom in mid-summer.
Source: Shades of Green
Added to garden: Spring 2007
Notes: VERY slow growing. Mine did not grow a second eye until its 5th year in my garden. and in the 6th year, still just two eyes. Oh yes, I cut leaves for a plant show and once cut, I couldn't distinguish them from 'Cherry Berry' except for a slight bit of red on CB. CB is a faster grower for me with the added interest of red scapes and seed pods but CB also sustains more slug damage.

ViolaAnn, I don't have this hosta BUT I'm wondering about the first five years ... did the one eye get thicker before the second eye was produced? If one were to look at the parentage of this hosta would thickening of the first eye be a requesit before the production of a second eye? OR am I overthinking this?

BTW, I really like these threads being reactivated from one year to the next to show how your hostas have progressed. I'm in awe of your record keeping ability.

Irene - not noticeably. If you go to my SmugMug gallery - link below, I've tracked it since 2008 (as well as all my other hostas). The link below probably takes you to "A" and you'll have to follow the link to "S" hostas.

2014 - 'Sitting Pretty' is still sitting pretty at 2 eyes. 8th year in my garden. Pretty yes, but a very, very slow grower. However it looks good. And unlike some, I have not found it to be bothered too much by slugs. Picture from July 16, 2014.

2015 - July 25. Wow! Three whole eyes and it only took 9 years to get there. If this weren't such a pretty little hosta, it would be gone from my garden and next year may still be its last.

2016 update - every so slightly larger, but sitting is about all this hosta does. I gave it to a friend at the end of the summer.
