Today's Hosta: 'Silver Threads and Golden' - Post Your Pics

Post by ViolaAnn »

The hosta for today, Saturday, is 'Silver Threads and Golden Needles' (not enough space above for the whole name).

I had one plant which I had for several years which showed signs of nematodes last year and was destroyed. However, this one was received as a bonus plant last year. I still have it in a pot and it's doing well. I've found it interesting how the green threads in the leaves barely show when it emerges, but gradually darken to be quite green.

Really starting to like the smaller Hostas and this one's on the list now. Guess it's just the evolution after you buy so many big ones and are starting to run out of room lol.

I have two plants. The first one has the better leaf coloration. The flowers are from the other one.

Name: H. 'Silver Threads and Golden Needles'

Description: has gold centre variously splotched with green flecks.
Size: Small (8"w x 6“h)
Origin: The history of the plant is 'Cheatin Hearts' begat 'Illicit Affair' which begat 'Stolen Kiss' which begat 'Silver Threads and Golden Needles'.
Flowers: 8" scapes have light lavender flowers in late spring
Source: Hosta Choice
Added to garden: Spring 2010

Notes: Is prone to slug damage and a copper collar seems to help. Leaves from this plant have earned me a 1st place finish in its size category at the Ottawa Horticultural Society June show for two consecutive years.

That TKF is a lot bigger this season.

I just noticed, from looking at the photos I posted, that I have to add ST&GN to my "magical" hosta group where colors appear and disappear - in my yard Fortunei Albopicta is the poster child for this type.

Lots of hostas that change colours. Many, of course, have something that is bright yellow when they emerge that fades to white or cream. ('Remember Me'), 'First Frost', etc.

And the 'Albopicta' which part way through the season becomes just another green hosta.

'On Stage' gradually darkens during the season as does 'Whirlwind'. Several get lighter - 'Janet', 'Punky' and another well known one that I don't have; so I won't name it less I've got it wrong.

And then there are the more subtle changes. 'Little Sunspot' emerges with solid green leaves that gradually develop a yellow centre. And 'Illicit Affair' where the leaves emerge yellow and the centre turns green leaving the gold margin.

I've likely got more - that's just what comes to mind. Maybe we should start a new thread just about those "magical" hostas. It's certainly one of the things that makes hosta growing addictive.

Here are two Silver Threads and Golden Needles today.

I have posted this first one before with Tsugaru Komachi Fukurin on the right. The STaGN looks a little small this season - might be getting some root competition - the bushes in there are getting too big.

The second one is looking nice. It's getting more sun this season. The azalea that usually shades it was damaged this winter with the cold.
Silver Threads and Golden Needles #2 - July 18, 2014

The flowers are late this season - probably related to the harsh winter.

Unusually dark green leaf centres, don't you think? Or maybe it's your zone. They never get that dark here.

2015 - July 25. Still in a pot and seems to do well there, but I may need a larger pot for next year.
