Hosta of the day -'Undulata Albomarginata' - post your pics

Post by ViolaAnn »

A bit late today. Been working on chamberfest concerts and have another this evening.

Anyway, how about 'Undulata Albomarginata' - the one our grandmothers grew and most of us have somewhere, maybe, like mine, acquired before we really knew what hosta were all about. I've had mine forever, it seems. At least as long as I realized my once sunny garden was no longer sunny. They are mired into tree roots and there for the duration and you know, I rather like them.

The wide margin H looks more like a Patriot type to me My UA was a cutting form my mother in laws its grown massive and is one of my better white marins (dont have that many with margins) My Patriot was a dissapointment not patriot at all nor was my Liberty labeled right its a Queen Josephene not that I complaining about that QJ is a faster grower for me Liberty looks like it would be slow as was its parent Sagae

My 'Liberty' is not a slow grower at all. But I won't post it here in a UA thread. Eventually we'll get to "L".

Name: H. 'Undulata Albomarginata'

Description: The mid-green irregularly margined and ivory-white centred Hosta that grandmother grew.
Size: Medium-Large
Origin: may be a sport of 'Undulata'
Flowers: Lavender in late July.
Source: Budd Gardens
Added to garden: Late 1990's. One of my first Hostas.
Notes: Thin substance; so can be subject to slug damage. I have 4 of these, all around my Linden tree and so mired into tree roots that they will be there forever.

These undulatas look great. You don't want to see mine this time of year. They look like swiss cheese. I'm replacing some with hostas of greater substance.

Oops, forgot to enter the date of the pic. It was early July though mine don't look as bad as they often do for this time of year.

I found some pictures of undulatas in my photo album dating to the early 2000s. I've been slowly removing them from my gardens and replacing them with others of thicker substance as I mentioned earlier.

I bought the undulatas and undulata univittatas in the late 70's, and divided them many times over for my garden club's annual sales.

The central plant in the first picture is Undulata Univittata, I think. I found that I had to divide it regularly in some locations or it would turn green OR maybe it was just the heat of summer that did it. If I've understood Chris' explanation correctly, the hosta in the top right hand corner of the first pic, then, should be Undulata. The second picture shows the whole h. Undulata.

I thought you should have a picture of Undulata for this thread and the two pictures show what Chris said... that Undulata Univittata is a bigger plant because of the greater amount of green. I think I'm finally squared away with these two plants. I may keep one of each for history sake.
