Pic of the Day--Climax

Post by Hank Zumach »

Hi All--It seems only fitting that we have the variety Climax growing in our Friendship Garden. In doing some research on the plant I was initially somewhat surprised to read that it is a sport of High Noon. For reasons that I don't recall, I had assumed that its background would have included a cross between Bridegroom, Marilyn and Satisfaction. In its two years in our garden it has quickly built up from 10x6 to 22x11. Even so, I expect Climax to continue to rapidly grow into a spectacular, attention grabbing specimen of about 50x24 when maturity is finally reached. And to think that some people don't understand why we so much enjoy growing hostas.

Some of my shots of Climax this season.

Climax is medium sized plant with a rippled edge. It is a sport of High Noon.

Third year in our gardens. This one is a slow, but steady grower. On the edge of the garden, so the wind and rabbits seem to damage it every year.

Those are some beautiful pic of Climax! Mine from Chris isn't nearly that large after 2 years, but I'm hoping that next spring it will leap. I've currently got it in a semi-raised bed under an old maple tree. I think I'll move it next spring.... along with a few others there.

Darn maple trees! Climax is a pretty steady grower here for us, too. It doesn't multiply that fast but the clumps continue to get larger each year.

I went back and gathered my shots of Climax from last season. I got this plant from Chris in 2008. It has always been a "stand-out" in my garden.

The color is a little "off" on most of these shots - camera issue. The edge should be brighter - the third shot shows the best.
