Daily Hosta - Gentle Spirit

Post by redcrx »

Gentle Spirit is a white-edged sport of yingeri.

I have had it since 2010 and now have it in a trough. It had been in the garden I had to dig up because of tree root problems.

Here is a shot from last season after I dug it up when I thought it was dying. It has come back very well this season and looks like a great grower.

I'd love to see more information about it - is its heritage known? How large will it get? etc.

Mark Zilis discovered it at Q&Z Nursery so I'm guessing it is a TC sport of yingeri. It was registered in 2009.

Some descriptions mention it as a "small" plant 9" inches tall and 30" wide. Spider type flowers show late in the season - August and September. It has very thick leaves "with subtle, but striking variegation".

From my pictures you can see the white margin can streak into the center. The color can vary a lot depending on the amount of sun - from dark green in shade to almost yellow in sun. I just got another H. yingeri in with leaves 3" by 5" so I would expect Gentle Spirit could come close to that leaf size if it were happy. (We all want happy hosta.)

I was talked into buying GS by a nursery employee when choosing hostas for a new bed. This picture was taken a few weeks after I planted it. I'm hoping the planting scapes will look nicer next summer.
