Pic of the Day--Captain's Adventure

Post by Eleven »

'Captain's Adventure' is a sport of 'Captain Kirk' from Keemskerk and registered in 2009. Info from Hosta registry:
15 inches high by 24 inches in diameter, upright mound, medium growth
Leaves have multiple shades of green to greenish yellow with a creamy white margin
Streak between the margin and leaf center looks as if it had been painted on (appliqué).

This was its second year in my garden, but it overwintered in a pot last year:

Please note the name and link in the master list. I won't have time to add this today.

Captain's Adventure is a sport of Captain Kirk.

Another thread dealing with Captain's Adventure with more different looks for this plant - viewtopic.php?f=1&t=55767

From my observations the write-ups in the MyHosta Database and the Hosta Registry don't tell the full story of this hosta. This is one of the many plants in the Gold Standard family line that makes multiple color changes through the season. The references above give many different looks to this plant. And here are mine.

I got the plant in 2010 and it came in with a white/creamy edge:

Here it is in early 2011 with a cream colored edge:
Captain's Adventure - April 28, 2011
Captain's Adventure - April 28, 2011
Captain's Adventure - April 28, 2011
Captain's Adventure - April 28, 2011
I couldn't find any later pictures for 2011.

And I couldn't get a good photo in 2012 but what I have shows that this plant goes through color changes - switches the margin to dark green and the center lightens up. Notice the new small center leaf has a dark center with a lighter edge. The Hosta Library photo shows a plant with the outer leaves having a light center with a dark edge while the interior leaves have a dark center and light edge. It also has a leaf with other variations.

Adding a few more pics, here it was in 2013 before any color change that year:

2014, including a couple leaf details as it's begins to color change:

And September 2015, finally looking decent (I really almost chucked it this year). Of course, I hand turned every leaf this spring because of the horrible drawstringing.
