Pic of the Day--Emerald Necklace
Hi All--Emerald Necklace, with its unique, very interesting foliage is one of my top favorites. Only the outer rim of the leaves are corrugated, the only variety with this characteristic that I am aware of. Early in the season (1st pic) many of the leaves have central portions that are a bright cream color, adding to the appeal of the plant. By mid season (2nd pic) the contrasting colors are less distinct but the plant remains very attractive. Since buying the plant in 1999 it has been growing in a spot that gets about 3 hours of mid-day sun. Its size reached 37x20 in 2005 before I took two divisions from it but it has quickly rebounded by going 32x17 in 2006 and 37x17 last summer, just about matching Mark Zilis' listed size of 33x16 for a mature plant. Slugs have not been a problem but all of our plants get a routine application of Deadline MP.

page 3:
The heritage of this hosta is listed as "a sport of a tardiflora seedling". But these flowers show-up in mid-season and have well defined stripes which is totally different from tardiflora flowers.
