Hosta of the Day - 'Olympic Sunrise'

Post by redcrx »

'Olympic Sunrise' is a sport of 'Katherine Lewis'

Hosta Registry - http://www.hostaregistrar.org/detail.ph ... %20Sunrise

Hosta Library - http://www.hostalibrary.org/o/olympicsunrise.html

This plant came up in a discussion about Touch of Class look-a-likes -
viewtopic.php?f=1&t=53928

While it may be "similar" at times to ToC, it has some vastly different "looks" to it. I classify it as one of those "Magical" hosta that completely change its look during the season. Here is one starting out:
Olympic Sunrise - April 17, 2010
Olympic Sunrise - April 17, 2010
And here is a second one at the end of the season (they are in similar light):
Olympic Sunrise - October 13, 2010
Olympic Sunrise - October 13, 2010
I debated as to how to do this presentation and came up with the "show the difference" first and then go into a more detailed approach in later pages. This is one of my oldest plants - first one in 2008. I have four of them. One is planted in a group of white centered hosta (no Striptease variants) - things like Pathfinder, Lakeside Love Affaire, Vulcan, Enterprise, Americana, Ann Kulpa. Two are planted side-by-side and get good sun. The last one is planted in my Halcyon group garden - not many pictures of that one.

This is long - 'Olympic Sunrise' over the years.

Here is the last one. It's in my Halcyon family garden.
In 2009:
Olympic Sunrise - July 11, 2009
Olympic Sunrise - July 11, 2009
Olympic Sunrise - July 11, 2009
Olympic Sunrise - July 11, 2009
Olympic Sunrise - September 26, 2009
Olympic Sunrise - September 26, 2009
And two years later - 2011:
Olympic Sunrise - September 20, 2011
Olympic Sunrise - September 20, 2011
Olympic Sunrise - September 20, 2011
Olympic Sunrise - September 20, 2011
This could be mistaken for Touch of Class but it really needs more sun.
