any one growing Humpback Whale?

I was wondering if anyone out there has Hosta Humpback Whale and if so what is the growth rate? Also does it retain the blue color or fade to dark green.

This is still quite rare in gardens, although I see it's now in TC. The famous Seaver/Letohla clump was still blue at convention time a few years ago. I imagine it stays more blue than Elegans.

I found someone selling it not as a Tissue Culture, on the fence on whether I should try it or not.

Silly question, but how do you learn when a plant is in TC? Is there a source that provides a lot of this information, or is it just a sort of "word of mouth" thing from various sources?

In this case, I just happened across the information (that someone has in their "new" listings). Paula Lehtola is offering a piece for the BADITC auction going on. Last I saw it was $200. At the price of that "new" listing, they would have to be TC plants.

I got one off the library Auction this spring, but it's still a baby. Fits into a 4 inch pot, if that tells you how small Pretty sure the mini I got at the same time was bigger. I'll have to report back next year!

ETA: Really glad I paid less than $200 for it.

oh-I just ordered one for $20-hasn't arrived yet. Not expecting it to arrive very large-but my empress wu was tiny when I got it 3 years ago also and has really exploded this year. Gardening requires so much patience

There are only about a half dozen tc labs in the U.S.A. that are propagating hostas. You can visit their websites to see what they're currently offering. Of course that's assuming that the hostas they're offering were produced by tc rather than by field division.

Information about a brand new hosta (which is currently in the tc lab but which has not yet been released) is often revealed by the originator of that particular cultivar.

'Humpback(ed) Whale' is never so blue as 'Elegans' and, predictably, ends up being green.

As someone else said, price is a pretty good clue to TC origin.

I emailed the store I got it from, he said mine was a second year TC plant.
