A form of Nakaiana

Post by redcrx »

I picked this plant up from Asiatica Gardens in PA. back in 2010. It was labeled "Nakaiana (wild Ehime)". This is the first season I may see it flower. The deer ate it last year but my new fence seems to have controlled that problem - now if the rabbits don't get through the netting the scapes may be safe. Some of the literature (Zilis) about Nakaiana mentions a leaf size of about 4 inches long by 3 inches wide. This plant has leaves that measure about 7 inches long by 4 inches wide.

Here is a "time" series from this season.

Here are some photos from yesterday when I noticed the flower scapes have color at the base of the scapes making it look almost black.

There are 5 scapes in this first photo:

That's a pretty looking plant. Looks like the flowers will be nice too :)

I like the way the ribs show on the smooth leaves. And the color progression is just like Fragrant Dream, one of my favorites. The dark bases of the petioles is certainly interesting!

nakaiana (wild Ehime) this morning.

In a group with one of my Gold Standard reverse sports top/left and Joker top/center. That's Kaleidochrome coming up late on the right.
