Daily Hosta #1 - 'Cracker Crumbs' - Add your pics

Post by ViolaAnn »

Name: H. 'Cracker Crumbs'

Description: Leaves emerge bright yellow-gold surrounded by a dark green margin that looks painted on. As the season progresses the colour becomes chartreuse and then almost coppery and continues to darken until late summer.
Size: Mini (12"w x 6"h)
Origin: sport of H. 'Shiny Penny'
Flowers: Funnel-shaped, lavender on leafy scape in late summer
Added to garden: spring 2005
Notes: viable seeds; forms a very dense mound in a short time.
I've divided mine up to form a border though I still keep some in pots.

In general, I've tried to show pictures of my hostas as they looked in mid-late summer. but I got to thinking that you need an early season picture of 'Cracker Crumbs' because the colour changes so much. Here's a shot taken in very early June of part of that same border.

2014 - the border has been growing well, but the last couple of years it's been decimated by foliar nematodes. I may dig out the least affected plant and see if I can treat it at all.

2015 June 21. This border is still badly affected by foliar nematodes, but looks good early in the season.

2016 update - I dug a part of the border early in the season before it leafed out. Washed the roots well and then soaked them in water with Pine Sol added. Planted it in a pot and there was no sign of foliar nematodes all season. The border was still affected, but because it was a dry year, not as badly. This photo July 7.

Hi ViolaAnn, I would refer you to an article by Warren Pollock beginning on page seventy of The Hosta Journal Volume35 Number 1. There is a huge amount of information about Foliar Nematodes in this article, I would call your attention to page 77 lower right Nematicide: Pylon. I am retired from the Pest Control industry, forty five years as a Pest Control Tech. Pylon is the greenhouse formulation and is rather pricey, the structural pest control product is Phantom, same active ingredient 21.45% vs 21.4% Pylon and is a little less pricey $72.40 vs $460.00 for the Pylon. This is a professional product and required license vary by state. Phantom is even labeled for bedbugs, which involves application to areas of close human contact. I know of situations where a high level of control, if not elimination have been realized. I am not looking for any debates or arguments, do with this information what you like and as always... FOLLOW LABEL DIRECTIONS.

Virtually EVERYTHING is restricted in Ontario.

AT any rate, in 2017 I dug another section of that border and gave it the same treatment and it's still doing well. Absolutely no sign of nematodes.

This photo was July 19, 2017 - after it had greened up.

I dug another section of the border and it continues to do well in 2018.
