Daily Hosta - 'Pandora's Box'

Post by ViolaAnn »

Name: H. 'Pandora's Box'

Description: Thick, glaucous leaves. Palest chartreuse to creamy white leaf centres with a dark grey-green margin; a lighter green area appears in the leaf where the white and green meet.
Size: Mini (6"w x 2"h)
Origin: tissue cultured sport of H. 'Baby Bunting'
Flowers: Bell-shaped lavender flowers in early July on white scapes.
Added to garden: Spring 2004

This picture taken July 29. All of my 'Baby Bunting' family got waterlogged in 2009 when the drainage failed in a container and none of them have done as well since then. This one is struggling, but I have hope that it will gradually make a comeback.

This one has been up and down for me - a couple of good years when first planted and then diminished for a couple of years. Comments I've heard that Pandora's Box is one of those that may grow better in a pot.......so potted it up last year- top is Aug '10 and bottom is from a week ago......

Pot gets more light and water than where it was planted previously.

That's the biggest one I've seen that has as much white as mine. Most of the others pictured have quite a bit more green in the leaves.

I was surprised when I started visiting this forum and people considered this one tough to grow. This one was divided in half already and moved on top of that. Still doing good.

RocknHosta,

That's a gorgeous Pandora's Box. Love the flowers.

This is the only good picture I have of PB taken on June 10 this year. It's been in this location in quite a bit of shade since 2008.
The slugs really like it. The leaves look like Swiss cheese right now. I forgot to use a copper collar.

I found another pic of PB from earlier in the year (May 27). The amount of whiteness in the leaves could be the product of progress/age during the growing season ???

2015 - July 03. Two divisions of Pandora's Box. The first is a decade old and has been just barely hanging on for a long time. It has now disappeared but I've not yet checked as to whether the roots are OK.

The second was new this year.

2016 update - The older, smaller division did not make it through winter 2015-16. The newer one with more green did well.
