Hosta of the Day 'Salute' - Post Your Pics

Post by ViolaAnn »

Today's hosta is 'Salute'. This is a lovely small, upright hosta with a blue leaves. Mine was new Spring 2008 and it's done well. Is also fertile and I have a lovely seedling from it as well.

really like tho open plan idea of this hosta however what it looks like after several years of growth will it have lost the space etc between leaves?? I think it would be an ideal candidate for a small pot as it looks now very star shaped sateley and indvidual.

Good choice for anyone, anywhere. This photo was taken in June but it looks exactly the same today (Sept 3). No burning, no holes, no stress. Very hardy. It looks to me like it's floating in an aquarium somewhere; the rippled leaves I guess.

Looking at your picture, got me thinking of today's hosta - 'Restless Sea'; so I looked them up and lo and behold, 'Restless Sea' is a hybrid of 'Salute. Sure can see the family resemblance.

Name: 'Salute'
Description: Narrow, pointed blue leaves which are held erect to form a vase shaped upright clump. Wavy edges and twisty tips.

Size: Small (10"w x 14"h) - mine is now larger than that.
Origin: 4th generation seedling of H. 'Dorset Blue'
Flowers: near white, tubular in mid-summer
Source: Budd Gardens
Added to garden: Spring 2008
Notes: This one continues to grow well. Is also produces fertile seed and I had one nice seedling that resembled it, though it was just green. (I also believe that 'Restless Sea' is a 'Salute' seedling. I kept my seedling for several years before sending it to plant sales.

2014 - mine is 7 years old now; so quite mature. Photo Aug. 8, 2014 and the Linden tree nearby was already dropping many leaves.
