Hi All--Considering that hostadom is now populated with over 3500 varieties, the problem of coming up with a meaningful, marketable name must be getting harder all the time. But those ingenious hosta pros are up to the task. Going in the opposite direction from yesterday's plant, Earth Angel, today we have Dust Devil. How could such a name come about for a hosta, you ask? Easy, if you're a hosta pro! All you have to consider is that Dust Devil's sport parent is Whirlwind, and there you have it! Another problem solved, in this case by hosta pro Mark Zilis.
Dust Devil has not been stirring up any problems in our Friendship Garden. In fact, after having a rather rough start in 2006, the plant has turned into a very attractive addition. Its overall dimensions have stayed the same but it has developed a much fuller clump at 24x10. That puts it at about the half way point as it travels to an expected mature size of 50x23.

I really like this plant in most years, but this year the margins got ratty. I bet it will be fantastic next year growing in the ground.

When I got mine last year there was alot more variegation in the leaves than what came thru this year. I don't know whether it was from heavier fertilization last year, or whether it went back to more immature form because of the late freeze we had this year. A huge number of mine did that...it was beautiful when I got it, though!

I really like this one. The leaves have a "glow".
I got this in 2009 and put it into my "Whirlwind" collection.
Here it is in 2011.
In a group with Eternal Flame on the left edge, Whirligig above, Victor center-top, Whirlwind Tour to the right of Victor. Then My Marianne and Seducer on the right - not part of the family. The "glow" shows up on some of the leaves.

More Dust Devil in 2012
In the "family" group setting with Eternal Flame top-left, Whirligig center-top (with a small Janet next to it - not a "family" member), Victor top-right This is a different Dust Devil in another garden. The "glow" is showing up later in the season

Dust Devil in the 2013 season
This is a new one still in the pot.
And the original Dust Devil in the 2014 season in the "Whirlwind" garden but a close-up so the family isn't showing
