Hosta of the Day 'Venus' - Post Your Pics

Post by ViolaAnn »

Today we backtrack to a plant I skipped since my 'Venus' is finally blooming. The bloom is stupendous and fragrant if the summer is long enough. A lovely green. My plant was new spring 2006. It started REALLY blooming only 2 years ago, but has done so reliably since, in September.

Description: Medium green, smooth, shiny leaves.
Size: Medium-Large (32"w x 22"h)
Origin: Sport of H. plantaginea 'Aphrodite'
Flowers: sweetly scented flowers of a twice-double form. The petal count is between 24 and 28. Venus resembles night-blooming cactus and fills the late summer and early fall with its fragrant, stunning flowers

And it doesn't usually have nearly as many slug holes as this year.

That looks terrific. I sure wish I could get a reliable supply of these because it seems that Venus is a lot more reliable to flower than Aphrodite.

My Athena flower really well, though, and dang I wish I had a picture of the flowers. I'm pretty sure they were also multi-layered just like Venus, sort of "double-double" like yours. My Aphrodite flowered (at least the plants in the shade did) but they didn't last as long or bloom as nicely as Athena and didn't look as full as your Venus.

And slug holes? That's what photoshop is for ;)

If I have many more years like this one I"ll have to get photoshop!

If there weren't an international border between us I'd send you some of 'Venus' as it's grown well for me.

Name: H. 'Venus'

Description: Medium green, smooth, shiny leaves.
Size: Medium-Large (32"w x 22"h)
Origin: Sport of H. plantaginea 'Aphrodite'
Flowers: sweetly scented flowers of a twice-double form. The petal count is between 24 and 28. Venus resembles night-blooming cactus and fills the late summer and early fall with its fragrant, stunning flowers.
Source: Floral and Hardy
Added to garden: Spring 2006
Notes: The bloom is stupendous and fragrant if the summer is long enough. A lovely green. In 2012, I had one bloom and it looked as though I would have about 4 more, but the stalks just dried up and didn't develop. It's been a dry year, but I've been watering the tree where it was located, yet I think the dryness contributed to the lack of bloom.

2014 - My 'Venus' had heaved quite a bit in the ground; so in the spring I dug it to plant deeper and it fell apart. As a result, I now have 2 'Venus', but neither reached its potential this year and neither bloomed. We had a lot of rain; so I'm looking forward to next year. This is the larger of my two plants on Aug. 9, 2014.

Still have two divisions of this plant but the one farther from my oak tree has done better than the once close to it. It actually bloomed this year, but the bloom was a bit wimpy for this plant. It was quite dry and I think both should have had more water.

2015 - July 03. The original division near the tree.

The division which bloomed, Aug. 13. This ia farther from the tree.

2016 update - one of my two divisions bloomed in 2016. The other did not. The other is closer to my oak tree and does not grow as quickly.

2017 update - Sept. 12. Lots of slug holes, but it bloomed well. The division in the pot did not bloom though it grew well.
