Hosta of the Day 'Restless Sea' - Post Your Pics

Post by ViolaAnn »

Today's hosta, 'Restless Sea' was new to me spring 2007. I recently moved it because a nearby border of Allan P. McConnell was getting too large and threatening to overwhelm this one. This is said to appear to always be in motion, hence the name. I'm not so sure about that but I really like the plant which has a little zig-zag edge to each leaf. Also white backs to the leaves which may also contribute to the name. This year it bloomed for me, possibly for the first time though I'd have to check my records to be sure.

I just got mine late last year, so it's still out in the growing area, awaiting its garden placement.
Great to see the beautiful flower display on this one!

Thanks Chris. But I'd like to see more pics of the sames hostas which others have. I guess maybe not everyone is addicted to the camera like I am. I've made a habit to photograph the entire collection once a week if I can and I find those photos invaluable as a record - but it takes time to edit and, particularly, rename them so I know what I have.

Wow Ann, once a week you photograph your Hostas? :o I'm lucky to photograph them once per season. It's not so much the photography, but like you said, the renaming of the files, resizing and sorting them that is time consuming.

I love your photos of the day. Restless Sea is on my want list, can't wait to get it!

Wendy - the reason I think those pics are so valuable is that I have diagnosed problems with my hostas - HVX, foliar nematodes and seen sports first when I'm editing the pics. I think we tend to look at the plants in the flesh somewhat selectively and don't always notice what is really going on with them. More than once I've seen it first in the picture and then taken a look at the plant and said, Oh yeah!

Ann, I think you are on to something there... I actually noticed that phenomenon just recently. Someone on another forum was talking about "Sara's Sensation" showing burning on it's leaves just like Frances Williams. I thought, mine doesn't burn at all, it looks gorgeous. So I was going to post a pix of my SS, and it wasn't until I was looking at the photograph did I notice that mine was showing burned spots on it's edges too! I never noticed it while observing it in my garden :???:

This one has grown quite a bit this year and seems to like the spot I moved it to last year. It's a late bloomer and bloomed prolifically this year.

'Restless Sea', new last fall and currently vying with 'June', 'El Nino', and 'Sleeping Beauty' for title of last hosta standing:

This is another late bloomer. This picture taken Aug. 31 of a year with a very early spring. It was still blooming 10 days later, but my picture isn't as good.

In 2014, 'Restless Sea' fills the space available to it in this narrow garden. As I post, it is covered with bloom and looks spectacular. Picture July 16, 2014.

Mine is in bloom today and it is lovely. It is in fairly deep shade so the blooms are lighting up that corner. I would guess this is 3-4 years old so not a robust grower or me. It is also surrounded by Wood Poppy seedlings.

Just a single leaf from a plant that is growing well. We really like it (and hope to use it in some breeding).

Mine looks really good this year. Definitely a favorite in the better half of my hostas. (Trying to make a top 10 or 20 list is too hard.)

2017 update - this one continues to do well. And it withstood the abundance of slugs in our rainy year. Photo Aug. 15.
