Daily Hosta - 'Gypsy Rose' - Add your pics

Post by ViolaAnn »

Name: H. 'Gypsy Rose'

Description: Similar to 'Striptease' but as it matures it stays considerably smaller. It has the same dark green margin, while the center of the leaf changes from lighter green to creamy yellow, with the distinctive narrow white line between the center and margin.
Size: Medium (30"w x 15"h)
Origin: Sport of H. Striptease
Flowers: Pale lavender
Added to garden: Spring 2009
Notes: This is my second try at this plant. The first was diagnosed with HVX in 2007. I'm hoping for better success now that people are aware of the virus.

However, mine is really funky looking and it's growth rate has been backwards. Still watching this one.

This is my previous GR just before it was diagnosed with HVX in June 2007. Not showing symptoms at this stage.

Mine is kind of buried by other hostas. I need to move Gypsy Rose to a more open spot. Mine is pretty young yet.

I think I've given this one long enough in my garden (new 2009) and unless it looks dramatically better next year, it's out of there.

Here are a few of mine. They are all the same age but different growing conditions.
The first one had over 30 scapes this season.

I don't think either of these two flowered this season.
I pulled a yellow sport off of the left side one last year so it's not happy this season.

Violann, I hope you give GR another chance, maybe move it to another location. Mine's done well in a shady location, northern exposure. A lot of my hostas were attacked by cutworms this past summer but GR still looks pretty good on July 12 whereas Touch of class to the right has lost some of its springtime lustre.

I didn't get rid of GR in 2013 as it looked almost normal. In 2014, most of it looks almost normal, but I've got distinctly different sports on one end of the plant. I don't think either is sufficiently interesting to keep; so at some point I'll divide them off and let them go to a plant sale as a "hosta".

2015 - July 25. After a slow start, this one began to look normal and I rather like it. Still haven't divided the sports though and must do that soon.

I noticed this color difference in Gypsy Rose last weekend. The main part of the plant is in strong sun but a portion gets some shade from a large Red October nearby. That's Vulcan in the bottom left corner.

With the Red October protection the Gypsy Rose still holds its color and the white strip.

That's Olympic Glacier on the right.
