Post by ViolaAnn »

Name: H. 'Mack the Knife'

Description: Beautiful dark green leaves are framed with uneven gold margins with hints of orange which fades late in the season.
Size: Small (15"w x 5"h)
Origin: H. 'Galaxy' x H. 'Hadspen Heron'
Flowers: Funnel-shaped, pale lavender on upright, bare, green scapes in late July
Added to garden: Spring 2004
Notes: Not so sure mine has ever shown orange in the margins.

This picture July 18. Mine languished for years too close to my driveway where it is very dry. This year I lifted it, took a couple of divisions from it and replanted it in a new spot - east side of my house. It got a bit sunburnt in our unusually hot and sunny June (after a cool, wet may). But in general it has done well in the new location and may have a new lease on life.

'Mack the Knife' has done well in its new location, in spite of scorching sun reflecting between the white aluminum siding on two houses.

2014 - strange leaves on "Mack" this year but it's been attributed to our very slow, cool, wet spring. It appears to have slightly rhizomatous tendencies as there is clearly a second eye growing at some distance from the main crown of the plant. I will divide it off for plant sales in the spring. You can see that additional eye at about 5 o'clock.

2015 - July 25. Doing OK, but nothing special in 2015.

2016 update. This one still didn't do particularly well. I dug it and divided it and will be getting rid of this this year.
