Daily Hosta - 'Orange Marmalade'

Post by ViolaAnn »

Today we leave the "P"s behind and move on to "O" with 'Orange Marmalade'.

Description: emerges with a yellow leaf center instead of green like 'Paul's Glory'. The yellow center becomes white later in the season.
Size: Large (42"w x 18"h)
Origin: Sport of H. 'Paul's Glory'
Flowers: pale lavender, tubular
Added to garden: July 2009
Notes: This hosta is patented. Mine has done quite well in spite of being in a dark place where some hostas don't do too well.

Orange Maramalade is one of my favorites. New this year, I thought it could tolerate more sun than I should have. All the first leaves burned badly. I cut them off and stuck OM in this raised bed until it grew some leaves. I loved it nestled between Mississippi Delta and Designer Genes so much, I left it here all summer.

I really like this hosta. We have three plants two of which are doing great. The third is not getting enough sun and seems rather stunted. Always treading that fine line between enough sun and too much.

Here- please look at my latitude it can handle full sun. When I planted it in a very shaded bed, it became a pacement sort of white, in my full sun - if the sun shines during the summer  it will have nearly the same color as an orange, just a tad softer.

Yes and sometimes it makes a lot of differences if you move them just one foot

If mine gets that large I'm going to be in trouble. Gorgeous!

Yours seems to have wider and more puckered margin than I've ever seen on this before. Very pretty.

5 years in my garden and it had barely grown at all. In July I dug it up and found almost no root development. So, I put it into a large pot for the rest of the summer. I've just moved it into a newly prepared and enriched garden when I dug out an entire border of 'Allan P. McConnell' to make more space. I'm hoping it will like the new location and grow.

2015 - July 03. This was as good as it got in 2015. I wish mine would grow. I moved it in autumn of 2014 to a spot with a lot more light and was hoping for better. I've had the plant for 5 years. Next year, I believe it will go in a pot and get moved around.

At a meeting of the Delaware Valley Hosta Society, that was held in a member's garden, I came across this Orange Marmalade and a lot of other really beautiful specimens.

2016 update - potted, moved around and likely to be removed from my garden in 2017. It was the 7th year in my garden.
