Some flowers that are a little bit different.
I have started this topic because I came across another flower with something "unique". Normally this would have been buried in the "Weedlings are you keeping any?" topic but I have come across this "trait" on a few other plants that are named. While getting some photos of a plain green rectifolia weeding the style on the flower had a small purple band on it. I got some better photos today but it's hard to focus on.
viewtopic.php?f=1&t=58097&p=502032&hilit=style#p502032
I found it on Art Wrede's 'Otter Point' - viewtopic.php?f=1&t=60316&p=502085&hilit=style#p502079
And also on one of Art Wrede's unnamed seedlings - viewtopic.php?f=1&t=57978&p=502019&hilit=style#p502019
I just noticed this season that 'Lacy Belle' also has this purple band on the style - viewtopic.php?f=1&t=56455#p502925
I noticed this "trait" on a few plants last season. I think 'Chariots of Fire' has the best example - I found it on Art Wrede's 'Otter Point' - viewtopic.php?f=1&t=60316&p=502085&hilit=style#p502079

While doing an update on Regal Splendor I noticed some color on the style. After I noticed the trait I focused on that for a few more photos.
The amount of color is highly variable. This first flower surprised me with the side color but its only on that front side - the back side is normal white I just didn't get a clear photo. And another flower:

I was out getting some photos of weedling flowers today and nearby is 'Phantom' in flower. So I took some photos of it and its flowers.
It also has some purple coloration on the style. I need to check my old photos to see if it shows up in them. Close-up

I love these sorts of little nuances with the flowers too. Like the translucent edges to the flower petals also
Re: Some flowers that are a little bit different.
It's interesting how many differences there are. My camera often blurs things.
I have found a "fringe" on 'Rhino Hide' - a real old topic viewtopic.php?f=1&t=56764&p=488772 Some of my old photos of 'Phantom' do show purple on the style - just blurry.

Re: Some flowers that are a little bit different.
Ed, you should check out the styles on Peacock Strut. The last centimeter is purple, at least on blooms I saw this year. (Sadly, no pollen for use in hybridizing!)
I wish I had gotten a picture, but DH cut the scapes off when it was almost finished blooming. The "bloom" picture in the hosta library is useless.

I don't have that. But I see it's from 'Riptide' which I have. I need to check it.
'Riptide' has a hint of color on the on the loop potion of the style but not on the end. I need to get some fresh photos.
This also ties in with 'Phantom' which is also out of 'Riptide'.

I was just putting up a new topic about 'Red Bull' and noticed it was out of 'Maya Kingsnake'. I went to the 'Maya Kingsnake' page in the Hosta Library and found a beatiful flower photo that has purple on the style.

Re: Some flowers that are a little bit different.
Ed, after seeing your picture of the 'Rhino Hide' flower I thought I'd better check to see what's up with the 'Rhino Gold' flowers and here's a crop of the original flower shot in my 'Rhino Gold' posting, and sure enough there's fuzzy bits there too!
Re: Some flowers that are a little bit different.
Thanks for checking Pieter.
I lost that RH many years ago. I got a new one to go in the garden a couple of years - it's fine but I missed the flowers.

This falls into the category of weird. I was getting flower photos of a Sparkle that is only green and noticed that some anthers were missing. I thought I had knocked them off when I pulled the pot out to get photos. BUT that's not the case - the style is huge (thick) and it seems to have two extra styles.

I was informed that Gosan Gold Mist has the purple color on the style. I went to my posts from 2014 and yes it is there - just never picked it up. viewtopic.php?f=1&t=58126#p495777
Gosan Gold Mist is a cross of rectifolia with 'Ani Machi'.

While getting a close-up of the purple coloration on the style I noticed I also caught some "fringe".
I have shown this one in the "Seedling Flowers out of Art Wrede's Collection" topic. viewtopic.php?f=1&t=57978&p=502022&hilit=quad#p502022

Re: Some flowers that are a little bit different.
I went out this morning to get some flower photos. There wasn't anything really new and I only took a few photos. But the array of variations seemed interesting to me. So I thought I would put some up here - they are not really "different" like others in this topic but just interesting. There is one that fits this "different" category, the last one shown here, because it has a purple spot on the style.
The first is a simple "swoosh" coloration that always makes me think of longipes latifolia when I see it. Another with a simple "swoosh" from Art Wrede's seedlings. Then we have Hirao Splendo with a lot of color and strips - but the stripes don't descend into the throat of the flower. We get a six pointed star in the center. Next is Harry van de Laar with a more extensive "swoosh" that seems to start at the top of the petal and continues down into the throat of the flower. This last one is new. It's a volunteer (weedling) with a huge number of stripes. It's growing in a row with 3 other weedlings that I have posted photos of before.

Following-up the last flower in the previous post:
A close-up of a petal with lots of stripes - almost looks like tributaries of a river. And the same plant a few days earlier when I noticed at mark on the style. And a close-up showing slug, speckled anthers and the style.
