I have one so far, lol.

My first cat Spider (female). She used to jump straight up and down on the door frames. She got 3/4 of the way up!

This is Spider as a kitten in 1995 playing fetch with her hedghog "rattle". She had rattle throughout her life and carried "him" every day by the scruff of the neck area like a kitten.



This is my attempt at an "artistic" shot. It shows our eye color well. (mine are green also, lol) (Wow, click on that thumbnail and she's bigger than life!! - take that as a warning, lol -)

This is why my hostas in GA had no slug problems. Muscovys LOVE slugs!! (You can just barely see the hosta behind the overgrown rose bush, it's the spot of yellow and purple) (clickable thumbnails)

My 2 Junes are going to bed for the winter.

Should I put them in an open ziplock bag after the leaves come off? - I didn't, and they are out now and growing.

I took the Junes out of the fridge yesterday (2/4/08) and planted them with finch cage bottoms strapped over the pots. (sqirrel proofing untill they figure out the bungee straps are chewable, lol).

I was looking at my Plantagenia today and I think I have flower scapes starting. By the end of the week I should know. There are 2 very different looking fat "leaves" coming out of the 2 biggest eyes, the stems are solid and thick. Now I'm going to have to dig out the pollen gathering and storing thread!

It's been 80 the past two days, tree swallows spent 2 weeks here and are headed your way! Rhododendrums (sp??) are blooming.

The Junes are growing, the lesser rooted one is a bit faster but they are both alive. Plantaginea is indeed flowering, I expect my first open bloom Wed (3 days from now) I see white in 4 places and another scape is starting from another eye. I plan on collecting pollen and saving it to use on all the other hostas on my have list . It feels like late April here (being from MA it just seems wrong for t-shirt weather in Feb!) Some days are light sweatshirt weather, others are hot in t-shirts.

I started Morning glory seedlings and they are outside now. I also bought 2 strawberry plants and put a finch cage over them so WE get the strawberries, not shareing with the "tree rats".

Plantagenia opened up just at nightfall today. I expect the next one tomorrow night, it grew 1/2 an inch in just a few hours! (no, I really don't have anything else to do, lol)

June has 1/2 inch of leaf growth today and what looks like 3 eyes. Other June has mild (hopefully) crown rot and is wait and see.

At least until Mother natures fury descends on you. In OC's life time he has lived in Pensacola, Green Cove Springs, Jacksonville, and all Mayport courtesy of the USN. When I got discharged, I was married, but registered at the University, thinking with all the time I had spent there I could get in state tuition. Unfortunate we did not have enough residence in Florida that qualified for instate tuition. SO, at the end of summer school, OC dropped out and moved back to N.C. and atteded Wake Forest University. Graduated, taught school awhile and had to take a job in Industry to support my wife and son. Pay in those days for a beginning teacher was only 240.40 a month and that was for only 9 months. When summer came I joined the Lab of Burlington Ind as a Chemist (my Major) and went from pillow to post after that, ending up as National Sales Manager for Specialty Chemicals for Hilton Davis.

When OC Developed Heart trouble, they retired Him on disability and he turned to gardening his mother was instrumental in that as she was the original green thumb. When she passed away. Old O(C inherited full truck load of her Iris, Lilies, Daylilies, CAnnas and Hosta. WE divided them among the kids and all have taken good care of them,

That was when I joined Halsons so I could learn how to take care of them and what a blessing the form has been to me. OC has built many personal friendships here, he calls it his second family.

Last October he fell and broke the ball off his right leg and drove it up into the hip socket and that required quite a bit of surgery to fix it. SO I missed all the beautiful fall leave s this past year, the 2 Snow's we had, as usual, not really much to look at, and now I am missing Spring.(still in a wheel chair) My wife has promised me that when it warms up enough she will take me and my wheelchair out to see what survived our Easter FREEZE last year Got all of O 'C's plants that were ready to bloom , and all his Liliums that weefre already up 6-8 inches. What the freeze didn't get tit aooears that the summder draught did. Oh well as gardners always say,.there is always next year

Nice pictures of your cats. It is interesting to read about your Florida hosta growing experiences. When I read about you wrapping up your Junes to put them away for the winter, I was wondering how they would do. I'm glad they survived and are doing well for you. Good luck with your new order that's coming from Hallson! I'm sure you will be happy with the quality of the plants.

Thanks for commenting! There is one surviving June and It's leaves are much smaller than last year. I may leave it in the pot this coming "winter" and see what happens. It had a second, tiny, eye, but it accidentally got decapitated and is now gone (I tried to root it, but the cat thought it was tastey ) Anyway, I planted 6 canna that I dug from the appartment "dump site" into 2 pots. I now have at least 20 growing! Every time I look there's new sprouts. They must really like the potting soil! Hostas will have shade like it or not!

Phantom's leaves were damaged by me when I unwrapped it. I rubbed the tips of 2 eyes pretty hard and this is how the damage came out.

A Florida hosta growing update:

I've had blooms on Reptillian, Bridegroom and Wheaten Blue (formerly Paul's Glory - color stayed blue rather than changing). Flower stalks are coming for Phantom and plantagenia while Halcyon and June are "just" growing leaves. (and that's fine, they need to )

Halcyon has been located to recieve the first shade on the padio and has done well there. It has held the blue color on the fist flush of leaves but the now coming second flush are comeing up green. It is fairly hot out there with the sun being directly on the dark painted padio. I have leaf burn on Reptillian (he did get a bit dryed out once early in my being owned by them), plantagenia - the older leaves, Queen Josephine - it was just shipped here and had some damage from that, Bridegroom, and June. Phantom and Wheaten Blue and Halcyon are looking great and holding up well.

I bought a cheap water meter to measure the dampness of the soil and have found the soil holding water well enough that I'm watering much less than I had been. The plants haven't dissagreed with the meter and I have less standing water in them. I don't seem to be able to give the cannas enough water, they always meter dry. I also bought some cute little gadgets from HD that use terra cotta to water the plants. You fill the cup with water and "stab" a spike into the soil (the spike is terra cotta) and the water bleeds through when the soil gets dryer than the terra cotta. I'm trying it out with Grand Tiara because it is in such a small pot I would be in danger of over watering or drying the poor thing out. So far so good. I'm seriously thinking about some shade cloth just high enough the pots don't get so hot, but I just bought two more plants from Chris and have to get at least 2 more pots, soil, mulch, and perlite, all under my housemate's radar (who complains about no more room for plants. ) I can still reach the railing... there's room!
