Exciting, Unexpected Surprise
As you know, I've been digging and potting hostas for our move to our new house. I had a small seedling from several years back, with nice bright gold leaves, that I decided I wanted to take along, so I dug it up weeks ago when it was just nubbins coming out of the ground, and have not paid any attention to it since. WELL! I want out to water the potted plants yesterday, and took a good look at this plant -- wow! It is in two pots now, since it was too crowded in one -- it's leaves are still a lovely light yellow, but the petioles are bright red, and extend all the way up into the beginning of the leaf as well as up the central rib in the back! Tentative name is "Lemon Rhubarb Kiss" (because of the little red "kiss mark" on the front of each leaf), but I'm open to other suggestions. It's a small size, with very many petioles so that it's bushy, and the leaves have some substance, although the leaves are not thick like "Love Pat" or some of those heavily rugose hostas. Have a look, and tell me what you think. Phyllis

Very nice. Seems to have rounder leaves than 'Fire Island' and 'Designer Genes'. Let us know how it holds its color.

Looks promising, Phyllis.

Re: Exciting, Unexpected Surprise
Thanks, folks. And thanks, Jim, for the suggestion for a name. I did think that the one I had was too long, but I somehow wanted to get the yellow/red combination into the name. In this, however, as in most everything else, "less is more", and one does well to "simplify, simplify, simplify". I will certainly keep track of it over the summer to see how the color holds up -- the yellow may fade a little, but that red is so very striking that I can't see it fading very much. As in my "Prairie Lightning", which suddenly developed green edges streaking down into the center, this one surprised me, since I don't remember it's having such red petioles in the couple of years since I grew it in the greenbasement. Sure is a pretty one. Love the colors. I like the name may be a little long but it's easy to pronounce, more so than alot of hostas.

Very nice! I'm a sucker for red petioles.
And I like the name you've chosen--seems very apropos to me.

Very beautiful combination. Reminds me of my young Red October.
What month was this born? Red December?
or was it generally Red Winter?

Re: Exciting, Unexpected Surprise
I'll take more suggestions for names -- I like to have a wide selection from my friends and fellow hosta growers. I probably sowed this one in October of 2008 or 09 -- I've lost the tag that said when I sowed it. Phyllis

Honstly Phyllis I didn't know you are planning on moving. For some reason I thought you were remodeling your home. Where is your new home? Moving could be allot of work. I'm sure you know already. Call if I can help. I thought of you last week when I hugged Viktoria. Later, Love, Lisa
Have I mentioned lately that my drinking team has a hosta problem?

Mercy, Marlys -- what a list! Thanks for all of them. I'll post the official name when I've decided what it is. What fun to include all of you in the selection! Phyllis
