Hosta of the Day 'Summer Snow' - Post Your Pics
Today's hosta is 'Summer Snow'. I received mine in spring 2010. Zillis indicates it's hard to grow a good looking clump; so I'm watching to see what happens. So far, it seems to be doing fairly well, but it's still a baby. Do any others grow it?

I hadn't heard of it, so looked it up and it seems highly unlikely that this plant is a cross between sieboldiana and tokudama. Why do you think it is said to be tough to grow? Looks like yours might be slow but is looking pretty good with its really crisp white margin.

The Hostapedia entray for 'Summer Snow' says, According to The Hostapedia by Mark Zilis (2009), "...I fully expected it to become widely grown and very popular. It has not...I cannot ever recall seeing a well-formed, "pretty" clump of 'Summer Snow'. Most of the time, the mound has been one-sided or irregular." p. 913
Anyway, too early to say for mine, but so far I like it. It's been around for awhile - was registered in 1980. I guess it's quite possible to mix up seeds and make an error in the heritage of a plant. But even Zillis doubts the listed parentage of the plant, noting that the vein count isn't right either.

Name: H. 'Summer Snow'
Description: Leathery dark green leaves with a slightly irregular white margin.
Size: Small (24"w x 26"h)
Origin: H. sieboldiana x H. 'Tokudama'
Flowers: Near white flowers in mid June.
Source: Hosta Choice Nursery
Added to garden: June 2010
Notes: with the 'Tokudama' heritage, I would expect a slow growth rate from this one. Mine seems to be getting smaller. Probably should move it and see what happens.

2014 - This has been getting smaller. For the first couple of years its location was likely too dark and too dry; so I put it in a pot in 2013 where it remains. It's had lots of water this year. We'll see what next year brings. Picture Aug. 8, 2014.

I had 'Summer Snow' for many years. It gradually gained more eyes, but always was small (or medium small) in size. A compact plant that remained close to the ground. The leaves were a unique, frosty green color with a near white margin. I eventually got rid of it because it never matured into a nice clump.

2016 update - 2017 will be the last year for this one in my garden. I don't have enough space to mess around with hostas which would rather not grow well.
